quattrotman: those must be worldwide sales? In Canada in 2003 there was only 741 Cayenne S & Cayenne Turbos sold. In 2004 from Jan-Sept only 759 Cayennes were sold, 382 were S models and only 121 were Turbo models.

That's how rare the 03-05 Cayennes were in Canada!

Here's my two cents worth, if it's even worth that much..... If you asked me 2 months ago, I'd say the '04 S' are fantastic machines, completely without flaw. It seems, though, when they hit 88.5k every effing thing breaks. Mine had a lifter go off the deep end here the past couple of weeks, the fuel pump, a window regulator, and just yesterday the power steering pump started growling....... On top of the transmission valve body being replaced last year about 6k ago, not on my dime, praise the Lord. It's a devastating blow because up until very recently, we loved it. It oddly enough still runs great. Handles great. Doesn't even have a squeak or rattle inside of it. It's not like it's unmaintained or abused. The good news for you, it seems, is mine is the only one in the world breaking in such a comprehensive fashion. So what ever you get, you should get 25 to 30k out of it at the very least.

But don't cry for me Argentina, I still have my 911SC with 247k that runs better than any 3.2 or 964 I've driven. In 6 plus years I've owned it, besides basic maintenance, I've only had to replace the starter. So I still have that going for me.

Sorry for dumping on you guys. I just needed a venting spot. Thanks for humoring me.

Turns out he does post lease inspections for the local Porsche dealer and has inspected over 200 Cayennes over the years.

Anyway he checks the vehicle and he finds a crack where the control arm meets the frame. Everything else on the vehicle was great. The coolant pipes were even replaced.

I paid this guy $250 (he wanted $375) to check the car and it was the best $250 I ever spent. I would have driven that car home without knowing of the crack and once I found out, there is no way the dealer would assist.

I had leads on a handful of 04 and 05s. They were all snapped up in a matter of days. I don't know what is going on but there is a run on early model Cayenne's S right now. Maybe because they have hit the sweet spot of low to mid 20K. But it was unbelievable.

I pretty much settled on an 04 S that was really lovingly cared for, in like new condition, taken to Porsche Dealer for full inspection and perfect bill of health with coolant pipes replaced at the same time. Mileage low 50K. Price is higher than the 05 S but the car is Mint. I agreed in principle. But just today I got a couple bites back on an 05 S with 50K miles for less than 2K more and an 06 S with under 40K miles for less than $26K. It seems like 06 is a no brainer right at that price? But no NAV (which is really a huge thing for me as I hate those aftermarket Navs you have to stick on your window) and the even though a bargain it's about 4K more than I really wanted to spend.
I agreed in principle with the 04S an was about to sign the bill of sale and fax it back when I received two bites back on an 05 S fully loaded with 50K miles for not much more than the 04S. What's more, I received a firm acceptance of an offer I put on an 06 S with 35K miles, but no NAV. 06 S is only $1K more than the 05.

My question is, should I go with the better deal which is surely the 06? Or go with the 05 S which is not as great of a deal, but has everything I want in terms of Nav, Full Leather Interior, Wood Steering Wheel, 20" Wheels, Black Exterior, Etc.?

My mind prefers the 06S but my heart prefers the 05S. Since I'm going to be driving the car everyday and not selling it immediately I'm thinking I should go with the 05S.

Go with 06S. You can retrofit the PCM later. It's about $1.4k from Sunset (refurb) and install is beyond easy.

Really? I did some cursory searches and I thought it would cost upwards of $3-4K to get a PCM unit for the car.

I just called sunset and they do not have refurb units anymore. Looks like it is indeed about $4K for the unit.

I got it last February. Sorry, libtech. But maybe you can still try tracking it down on eBay? Either way, I'd still go with an '06

06' I was looking had Coolant Checked and Replaced followed by Engine removal for repairs according to carfax. Sounds to me like Plastic Pipes Leaked and were replaced followed by Transmission Seal Repair?

I wonder if this is a good thing or bad thing? Bad in that Plastic Pipes failed at 20K miles and a precusor of things to come or good in that the repair was already taken care of? Car only has 30K miles.

Default Purchase Completed

Finally settled on a car. Put a deposit down on an 05 Cayenne S, Nav, Leather Package, 50K Miles. 06 S with under 40K miles was tempting but was relatively stripped down and after going from a fully loaded Touareg with Air Suspension and 4.2L it would have been too much of a step down for a daily driver.

Very excited and relieved to have this over with. I used to love buying cars but now it's a huge chore. Part of the problem is how exhaustively I feel I have to research before I can buy anything. I'm like that with pens, so imagine how I am with cars.

Thanks for the great advice I got here. Will post some pictures when I take delivery.

Here is a sneak peak at the new (to me) 05 I just picked up. Car was in better condition than I expected. I am a super picky guy and even for me, the car seemed virtually like new. I can't believe it's 6 years old and the outside looks virtually perfect. Interior barely has a scratch on it.

Car runs and drives like new. I'm just afraid to bring this car back to NYC now and subject it to the myriad of potholes and flying rocks that are sure to barrage the car the first day I am back.

Look forward to being an active member of the forum.

Are the wheels white, or is that a trick of the camera?

I am wanting to clarify, you can retrofit PCM? Meaning I could pull out my CDR-23 and install a PCM with Nav etc? that refurb price point makes me reconsider aftermarket......
