I had to have the motor on mine replaced last month. 81K miles. It acted up intermittently for awhile - needed to close the hatch forcefully at times - but then it refused to fully latch at all and the warning light came on in the dash console. Actually, even when new it usually required a bit more closing force than I would have expected to get it to latch correctly, but that seemed pretty common among all Cayennes back in 2004.
Since it was replaced it has worked very well and doesn't require any special effort anymore to close the hatch. I'm thinking they've improved something here over the years.
Any idea what the part is called? Mine went on the fritz, and I can't find anything named any sort of permutation of "rear hatch closing motor" or the like (Porsche refers to it as the "rear flap closing aid motor" in the service guide) on Pelican.
(Thanks! Just to clarify, it's inside the door? Now let me make things weirder. It unlatches just fine. I popped open the access panel in the door, and when you push the release button on the tailgate, the lock pops and makes that whirring noise as the latch returns to position. Is that a different motor?)
Edit: I think it's the lower part based on the descriptions I found. How do I access this? I have a PDF of the shop manual, but there's nothing in there about this that I can find.
That's different. The release is in the upper lock (the one on the hatch). The lower lock is the one on the sill, with the striker plate. The power closing mechanism pulls the striker plate tight when the upper lock is latched.
OK, that makes sense. I thought the hook looked lower than normal, and the door closes tight (unlike when the closer mechanism doesn't engage, which was a common problem).
Any advice on access? I'm assuming if I open up the spare tire area I'll see a panel, but I might as well ask.
If I can get my act together, I'll document the procedure for anyone else. From what I understand, '04s have this problem.
Having the same issue on my 08. I changed the lower and upper part of the lock without luck. Did you end up finding the solution for it? I think my lower motor doesn’t even move at all. It’s always at it’s retracted position. The parts are all new.
