The transmission control units on early models were suspect, but it does sound more like valve body to me

Make sure the S/W revisions match between TCU and ECU after anything is replaced as well ... That was another issue "back then".

How much does it run do something like that?? check the TCU & ECU? And how much does it cost to replace the valve body for the transmission parts and labor...?

You can ask your dealer for a quote...and then shop independents.

For parts, Sunset Imports would be my first call.

Unless you have access to PIWIS, you wot be able to check nor update SW

Off the top of my head, I thought TCUs were in the $300s, Valve Bodies in the $600s. From Sunset.

The parts have been revised more than once and you have to have the correct controls for a specific valve body -- even the step motor was changed and I was told this required a control change.

I know that the early valve bodies had issues that caused this because I was told that my 06 had the newest one and so replacing it would not help - I had clunky sounding downshifts. The VB was evidently the usual suspect.

The largest improvements came from having the step motor changed - it was not moving to the fully "off" position -- do you ever get an intermittent 4 wheel drive warning?

Another surprise was how sensitive the transmission was to having the fluid level a little off.

In the end Porsche changed it all again (including the VB) also one of the mounts - to the newest revisions and I have never had the problem again. They could not pinpoint the exact part causing the problem ?

I had a quote on TCU on previous beta P!g (built in 03) and it was $700 uninstalled.

Maybe start with fluid flush/fill...

My '06 is in right now for the controller. I had the servo motor failure on the way down to Orlando last month, P of O replaced the servo motor and told me to get the (s/w matching) controller done at my dealer in Nashville. I had the valve body job done last year. Hopefully this will be the end of my transmission issues.

I'm glad this pepper is still under CPO coverage (until Oct.), otherwise this would be out of pocket. Still debating whether I'm going to keep it. If I unload it I would get better value if it still has some warranty.

Yeldogt: no I have never got the 4 wheel driving warning..I just have that hated "!"
Wirunner- that's another thing I wanted to do flush and refill the atf. Because I don't have warranty anymore I'm at 95xxx.

What is reason for the ...... i

I bet that changing the fluid is not going to fix your problem -- I'm not saying that a transmission with almost 100k on it would not benefit from a properly done change with the correct fluid -- but you may be doing it twice if the valve body is the problem. The fluid change procedure is a little complex -- and the fluid costs not insignificant.

You can probably et access to a free code reader (some auto parts stores offer such service) to see what the "!" is related to.

FWIW, I don't recall a transmission flush on an alpha/beta fixing a clunk...

It was recommended to me once that harsh shifting potentially could be the result of low fluid level...

But who are we kidding, it's an 03. Your VB is shot!! Bend over for the dealer NOW!!

Come on Lewis, I was trying to play nice and stay positive.
