True. But that V6 seems waaaaay more VW than a V8 TT. Put that engine in the Touareg and I'd probably still like it.

there's no coolant tube issues with the v6, it's only an issue with the v8s

the v6 is VW's VR6 engine. the 04-06 cayennes use the 3.2 vr6 producing 250hp. this engine was also used in the Golf R32, the audi TT, and the touareg.

the 08-10 cayenne's use the 3.6 vr6 with dfi producing 290hp. 2011+ use the same engine producing 300hp.

Thanks for the input, it's been very helpful.

After a lot of nosing around these forums and the 'net, and with my budget in mind, I'm leaning toward an '04 to '06 V6. A V8 from those years is within my reach, but I think the V6 will is how I'll go.

I know the V6 isn't nearly as quick as the V8 (6+ vs. 9+ seconds 0-60), but I think it has adequate power for what I want out of it. Any, anyway, a Porsche is about handling as much (or more than) acceleration. I also get the impression that the V6 motor has fewer dramas.

Shawn, you should be able to get one 23k and below.....I would imagine 16-19k at auction above 50k in miles....

I would just stick with models that tend to have one single owner. Carfax may not mean much too because some Rennlisters etc do it themselves and some of them may be better at maintenance than a stealership.

You would really luck out if a forum member might have a used Pig to sell....look in the classifieds. I know a dealer in Dallas Tx that is fairly easy to work with and would locate a car for via wholesale auction.

Pm if you are interested.

Thanks, Cord.

I checked the classifieds and didn't see anything for sale in my range. I have a local dealer/mechanic who I can work with to find one at auction. However, if that doesn't work out I'll take seriously consider your dealer.

Tomorrow I'm going down to look at an '05 Cayenne with 80k on the clock, one owner, maintained by a Porsche dealership (the one selling). If it all looks good, I should be driving it away for about $16k...

Found one, bought it yesterday.

'05 Cayenne, Lapis Blue/Grey, 82k miles, one owner. Sticker was $18k; after trading in (unloading) a 2000 Mazda MPV that has given us yeoman service for ten years, I financed just over $17k including tax, title & tags.

A two-hour highway drive back home from Philly and I couldn't be happier. It's tight, it's comfortable, has enough power to get job done, and it neither rides nor handles like a truck.

In a couple weeks I should have my annual bonus in hand:
  • Eibach springs
  • A new radio (w/external input, Sirius & USB
  • A tow hitch & wiring
  • 20" wheels & tires

My son's 2008 R32 has the VR6 motor. Nice engine IMHO.

Congratulations on your purchase.

Lapis is a nice color...looks better once you switch out the side markers from orange to clear (and use a silverstar bulb so it stays silver until illuminated)

If you bought it from a Porsche dealer, I would hope that all the TSB's have been done, but I would still recommend becoming a contributing member of Renntech.org so you can access all the TSB's for yourself.

I did so the first time you recommended it. Thanks for the tip!

Lapis blue is a great color!

Look into mObridge (from cartronics.com or the like) for external iPod and sat hookup (it has an aux input that would could connect an aftermarket sat to - works fantastic).

Good luck!

Mr Lewis..........ok, I see these kids with audis and golfs or MK's go and turbo or super charge all theses engines, VR6 or V6 as wikipedia suggests they call it now.

Of course they are not longitudinal engines like the cayenne but what is there to stop one of these kids or tuner shops from starting to work on these now?

I mean, replace pistons, bore them out more, high performance headers, exhaust manifolds and systems.........I think with forced induction and 4-8k these should be cheap and easy cayennes......with 300-400 hp........and the cayennes tranny should probably be as robust

I feel that getting these cars up to 300 plus HP, makes them attractive to the 2nd and 3rd gen'ers coming on, who love to do nothing but mod, then dump..

Or does the porsche 02 sensor on each bank in VR6 and Maf cause the car to go shutdown without regular calibrations its used to seeing in porsche settings?

I just dont get how we couldnt apply the Audi TT similarities to this engine and it not throw codes, rods or a pocket book out.

I frankily just want to see it done.........I mean why is it stupid to throw 5k on a 6er when you do the same at the cost of tubes, coils, and transmission seal.......on the standard 8 issues

Bump for cordsig79's question. How similar is the Cayenne's engine? Can it be modded with the existing aftermarket parts for the VW VR6s? That would make the base Cayennes MUCH more interesting!
