2004 cayenne V6....are they a good buy??
I am currently looking at an SUV for the wife and the early V6's are in the price market I am interested in. There are a number of horror stories about these early Cayennes....is it something to be worried about....are they that bad or is all blown out of proportion???
Don't worry about the power....this V6 will be plenty for the wife and the fuel economy should be a little better than the V8.
We have a 928s4 if want to go fast...LOL!!

just be prepared for cardan shaft replacement if it has not been done yet....
My list of complaints is here and I am at 99k.....first owner 2006 base cayenne.
Things it likes to eat........Lots of premium gas, tires(17 oems still eat up the rubber, recommend a hard all season tire, limited selection) and oil changes.............
So its been an easy car in comparsion to the V8 big bretheren.

Though my mileage is low I never had issues with my 2005 V6. Only tires, brake pads and rotors – just the consumables. Oh yea and gas, lots of gas…
I just ordered a 2011 v6 and it makes landfall in the US on Saturday, I hope this one provides the same reliability.

@mudman2..........so should I be thanking the Porsche(paternal) or the Volkswagen(maternal) side for the good hybrid genes in this build?
I keep getting worried something catastrophic is going to be discovered in these models........
I got an 06 Jeep wrangler at the same time and had 97k miles on it, then sold it to carmax for 7900 last month, completely fell apart in the same time frame with the same mileage......engine constantly overheated, dials and buttons fell off the dash, engine ran like sheet, much cheaper to "fix" or put in the shop but nothing ever solved the issues on the Chrysler engine and cooling system..........new raditor, head gasket, clutch fan, thermostat, and premium high mileage coolant...........nothing worked at all. So good riddance for now. Heck I think I got all that done for the cost of brakes and rotors on the 6er...
These cars were bought at the same time but the Cayenne really doesnt have to many hickeys in its genetics to make it throw up an engine, coolant system, compared to the jeep..........and it looks very clean.

I had an 06 V6 and it essentially had the exact same problems as my 06 V8, minus the coolant pipes. All were covered under warranty.
If you buy a well cared for 2004 it should have all the TSBs taken care of.
Other than that, IMHO, the V6 was underpowered and for that reason actually ate more gas than the V8.

MY '05 base has been a great car, bought it with 30K, CPO. I haven't had to bring it in once since I've had it. It did unfortunately wet the whistle for a new 2011. The 3.2 is just fine, the 3.6 is a big improvement (MY 2007 and on).
