Default Loud noise during cold start

When starting up my 04 turbo after it has been sitting in freezing or near freezing weather I am getting a loud squelling noise. The noise is very noticable and only happens right after the key is turn and lasts a couple of seconds...no more than 5 then goes away.

The odd thing is after the car has been warmed (oil up to temperature and driven) it does not happen again until then car has sits 6-7 hours or overnight.

I don't know if it is something that is seizing from the cold or what. Any tips on the likely culprits?

Belt...or more specifically, the belt tensioner would be my first guess.

May be your starter, they are known to make a kazoo type sound when they are cold.

It may be the starter itself, because it literally only makes the noise as the car is turning over. Is this something to be concerned about?

Most V8-equipped Cayennes produce an alternator whine for the first few minutes. Afterwards, the whine usually comes from elsewhere within the vehicle.

Unless the starter is hanging up I don't see how you could have 5 seconds of noise from it.

My water pump would make a noise on very cold days - lasted 5 to 10 seconds - it was a high pitched sound .....not as loud as the "chirp" that a slipping belt makes.

I also had a failing climate control fan motor make a similar noise as the water pump -- again -- only first start on very cold mornings.

that sound is your starter going away as a result from your coolant pipes leaking coolant all over it. Done your pipes yet? If not, there is your sign that they are leaking. You might not have any other signs of the pipe failure yet as the the coolant stays in the intake valley until the inevitable massive failure but thats where your starter lives. start searchin the coolant pipe leak threads.

That would explain the cold weather bit. Materials contract and leaks occur.

Default porsche cayenne platinum edition

Hello,

Just picked up my cayenne platinum edition from dealer a month back. Only 3000km on it. The car make strange bang noise from engine compartment when started in cold weather. This only happens when the car is cold and only for initial 10-15 seconds, after that no problem at all. the noise is very loud as if something exploding inside the engine. the reeves start to drop from 1100 to 700 and then go back to 1100 until the car warms up? Took it to the dealer and he couldn't find any issues. Any ideas? you can see and hear the engine in the attached link.
