Always a strong smell from the 996 after a hard drive, never from the P!g.

Maybe you lost a ham sammich when you did some engine work?

Never had that. My P!G often smells like burnt coffee and donuts, however.

Dealer had it for potential transfer case issue, service the front diff, replace an exhaust hanger, tighened up a bunch of stuff

So the covers were off for sure, wonder if they are catching fire, hmm wonder what the right off value is these days

Gear oil? That stuff smells like a p!g farm out of the bottle, I can only imagine what it smells like when heated or dripped onto hot exhaust components....

Seriously, since they worked on the exhaust hanger, I am sure it's just the new part coating or the grease from the mechanic's hands/gloves that touched the exhaust pipes burning off.
