hoping someone can help!

just bought a 2006 cayenne. when the light setting is on "auto" the instrument and steering wheel lights dont go on. the only way they come on is to switch the light setting to "on"

I tried fiddling with the instrument light dimmer, but it didnt help

does anyone know why my instrument lights wont go on when set to auto?
