why is a 2004 turbo almost the same price as a S
I just started looking at used cayenne's . I came across two 2004 turbos on the internet with a asking price of 24000 from motivated sellers and a few S's around 22,900-23000. Millage is similar. This is in canada
Didn't the turbo cost a small fortune more when new!!! I dont get it, its pretty tempting to just get the turbo.
Any opinions.

Overproduction of Cayennes in general have lead to depreciation.
One note on early Turbos...try and determine if there are any oil consumption issues, as well as the usual items (coolant tubes, coils, etc....)

Usual wear items are not a problem at all..... I'm just worried if the motor blows or some other major mechanical item.
Is there any down side, any at all to owning a Turbo? Ex- transmission not strong enough , turbo problems , cold weather turbo problems ( Im in canada and -40c is pretty normal ) , engine problems, weak spots - stuff like that?
what kind of MPG would a turbo get on the highway at 60mph? 18-19 I hope

If you look at the used market in all the major brands you will see many models where the initially more expensive cars only command a small price premium. The top models were more complicated - hence more expensive maintenance. Plus they normally used a great deal more fuel.

Must be Cali traffic. My mixed driving gets about 16-17 around town and i can get in the low 20s son the highway with my 04 Turbo.

Without going into details $24k isn't bad for a 04 CTT, great deal. Just put another $10k aside for future repairs and you should be good. There seems to be an $8K average price difference here from an S to a Turbo.

Everything else just seems to be rumors as far as I can tell.
Not sure if there are just more pre 2005 units out there so the occorance of problems seems artificially higher, or if they just have more miles on them so they ran into issues earlier.
Some of the other issues should have been addressed on any used Cayenne. Drive shaft, coolant pipes, trans seal, control arms, etc.

One thing to consider. Sales of the Cayenne obviously slowed down enough in 2005 to prompt Porsche to offer a 2006 "Turbo S" to bring some excitement to the line. Sales had slowed enough at that point they redesigned it into a face lifted version for 2008.
I would bet the vast majority of Cayennes on the road are 2004. This was probably the peak of the sales for the early Cayennes.

I have heard all sorts of comments about avoiding the 2002-2004 models. However, the only factual information I have ever been able to find about the differences is the nav system is different. Somewhere in 2005 they changed from cd based to DVD based.

AFAIK, there was only one actual recall "back in the days"...and that was the infamous A506 Cowboy Belt Buckle recall by the NTSB/NHTSA. A search of the P!g pen will reveal details and actual photographs of the device...quite a bit of engineering involved in that piece.
P!gs follow the same rule....buy the newest model year you can afford and verify that all TSB's have been applied (even the simple ones like one of my favorites "grab the wiper arm and bend it to set a different angle of attack"....classic).
If you would like to educate yourself on P!g history, I would recommend joining Loren's site. You would then have access to the TSB's for the P!g from day one.
A CPO P!g is always preferred; otherwise put aside some money to self insure.

I would imagine that a fair number of the issues have been worked out on cars wtih higher miles. Either check to make sure things have been updated/repaired or build the potential repair costs into you price.
