Default Friend has '05 "S" with 190,000 miles, will sell for $10K, go for it?

Hi there,

I'm a 993 guy and never considered getting a pepperwagon, but with the birth of my daughter we are looking at larger vehicles. A long time friend of mine is a salesman and has an '05 Cayenne S with 190,000 miles on it! He let me drive it, and it drives amazingly well and does not look or feel worn at all. The car is always clean when I've seen it, and he's always been vigilant with maintenance. He is ready to buy a new one and offered it to me for $10,000.

It has been perfectly reliable for him, other than the coolant pipes and new coil packs. Am I nuts to consider one with so many miles? Are the transmissions pretty solid on these...that is what I imagine would go first at this mileage.

Thanks for any advice.

If he is a Porsche salesman, ask him to CPO the vehicle and then buy it...

After he stops laughing, ask if the cardan shaft has been done (and how many times)....

At $10K, you can easily buy it and self insure (say put $5K in a coffee can) against almost anything.

Questions to ask/consider:
Fluid changes (oil in the coolant), brake fluids OK.
Brakes/Rotors.
How many times has he done coils/plugs? What is the revision of the coils in the P!g now?
Battery last replaced when?
Status of all (opne) TSB's?
Oil consumption?
PASM operation/performance/pump rebuild?

I would also consider becoming a contributing member to Loren's site (renntech) so you can have access to all TSB's and associated documentation.

Godspeed....

At 190K miles, I believe you may have found a P!g that has been ridden more than RL member T2 Cayenne Turbo...which last I knew was about 180K miles (and for kickers, his 03 996 Turbo passed 250K miles....some people are just lucky)

Actually, he just posted the other day with I think 197,000 on it.

Anyway, for $10k I would buy it. If it is well taken care of it should last a long time with some regular maintenance.

I've run a few car to het 300k mark and been pleasantly surprised how most do above 200k. Most of the problem for most people is psychological.

You can have my immaculate '05 CS with 114k for just $20k

Almost everything on it has been replaced, at times more than twice, and in some instances four times. My P!G is a thing of beauty. I guarantee it!

I had an 87 Jeep Wrangler with a carbonated 6 in it. At 170,000 miles I decided I wanted to swap in a newer "high output" fuel injected motor. Figured I would just kill off the old motor since it was not worth anything. So from 170,000 to 220,000 I never changed the oil. It didn't really leak so I never really had to add much.

At 220,000 I gave up trying to kill it and did the motor swap anyway. I drove that Jeep to 280,000 before I sold it. Ran into the new owner about 2 years ago. Someone lied to him and said it only had 80,000 miles on it when he bought it. He had put about 80,000 on it. Who knows how many miles it got between me owning it and him. So it has somewhere north of 340,000 on it. Maybe a lot more.

I'm sure this guy took better care of it thinking he bought it at 80k than 300+. Sucks that someone got away with the deception.

I bought my 05 S in January with 80k on it for 19k. I think 10k is too high, considering anything at this point that will need to be repaired is gonna cost 3-5k. Why not get a lower mileage one with less mechanical wear.

190,000 miles is a lot but they are pretty reliable trucks once they've sorted out. 10k seems pretty fair to me, it is a Porsche after all. I would ask to see the complete service history of the car, if he works at a dealer should be having it serviced there. Having the coolant pipes done is a plus. I would wonder about the cardan shaft, control arm bushings, valve body, and maybe even the front diff. Inevitably, something will go wrong with it but if you've only paid 10 to get in the door you'll still be doing good.
