I was paranoid because dealer wouldn't do it. No problem though at a local smoggier. Very low numbers after 68,000. Moral of episode is stay away from dealers!

What have they got to lose? If you fail, you still pay, plus they could make a quick buck off selling you parts to make it pass. Makes no sense. Their loss.
I have cut the secondary cats open, and it's just a baffle by what I could see. I suppose when the metal heats up it might destroy a few harmful particles, but it's really just a small muffler. I see no reason that would affect passing smog.
Well, one more reason not to go to the stealer!

medtech: Thanks for the info about the guts of the cats. You are correct about the effect on the smog test = Zero (at least no noticeable effect).
