Cable for Durametric / PIWIS?

I own one of those cheap, standard-OBD2 readers. It works nicely with my '04 Cayenne, I've used to it check error codes and general information a few times.
Since I have a OBD2-to-USB cable that came with it, I thought it would be nice if you could also access the ABS, airbag and such systems on the Cayenne. I tried the cable with the Durametrics software and a few others I found online, but it could not detect the car. I did some googling and from what I can tell, there is a porsche specific cable you need for those to work.
Does anyone know more about this? What is the difference between a standard OBD2 cable and the porsche specific ones used to access these sub-systems? Just curious since I like fiddling with electronics and computers, and if there is any way to mod / build a cable for this, it would be awesome
