Porsche on the Pepper
No shortage of on-road, off-road or bad weather capability in the 2010 Cayenne.

Porsche’s sportscar fans are dedicated, and eventually accepted that their favorite sportscar company could build a people-and-luggage-hauling machine such as the Cayenne SUV, which went on sale in 2002. Buyers, however, loved the vehicle, and so Porsche added a turbocharged model soon thereafter.

Despite being known as a sportscar maker, Porsche did have an enormous amount of off-road experience before creating the Cayenne, having built African desert racecars beginning in 1987. After five years of better-than-expected sales, the Cayenne was restyled slightly for 2008, adding a rear spoiler.

Now the lineup is getting complicated. For 2010, Porsche has introduced a special version of the Cayenne called the Transsyberia, named after a 7,000-mile off-road race from Moscow to Ulan Bator (the capital of Mongolia), in which, in 2007, three Cayennes placed first, second and third.

Basically, the new Transsyberia is a tweaked Cayenne GTS – it has a 405-hp V8 engine, but it has higher gear ratios for even better acceleration. The Transsyberia is also a limited-production model with an MSRP of $70,800.

The Cayenne line now consists of a V6 base model that makes 290 hp, an S model that uses a 4.8-liter V8 that produces 385 hp, a GTS that uses the same V8 tuned to produce 405 hp, a Turbo edition that makes 500 hp and a Turbo S that makes 550 hp. The V6 Cayenne has a starting MSRP of $45,500, while the Turbo S has an MSRP of $126,300. In addition to the powerful turbocharged V8 engine, the Turbo S includes much larger wheels and tires, larger brakes with ceramic-composite rotors and an active variable damping suspension.

The GTS is available with a six-speed manual transmission, although all of the other V8 models use Porsche’s Tiptronic S six-speed automatic transmission. All of the Cayennes come with four-wheel drive with low-range gearing for serious off-road driving.

There is also a long menu of personalizing touches, from matching-color seatbelts and dashboard gauges to interior trim of either aluminum, wood or carbon-fiber, and many different steering wheel designs. A conventional glass sunroof is available, and so is a unique four-panel glass sunroof that covers almost the entire roof, three panels of which can open.

Standard on all Cayennes are Porsche Stability Management (PSM) and traction control, off-road tuned antilock brakes, trailer-towing stability control and six airbags.

The brakes are oversized in the Cayenne to stop the SUV with precision. The traction control system works with the low range gearing, and the Cayenne is equipped to ford a stream 19 inches deep. An available Off-road Package with air springs that raise the Cayenne three inches also includes skid plates underneath. Yet another system is Porsche’s Dynamic Chassis Control, a driver-selectable anti-roll control system that lets the driver increase or decrease the amount of weight transfer side-to-side while driving around corners.

The center differential of the Cayenne works similarly to Porsche’s 911, with a clutch pack that varies power sent rear to front, and it can also lock in rugged terrain when a wheel becomes airborne. Engine power is distributed from a normal 62 percent to the rear wheels to 100 percent to either the front or back, depending on conditions.

The 2010 Porsche Cayenne is over-designed for capability in any condition, especially considering that the Turbo S will reach a top speed of 174 mph. Try finding another SUV that can claim that.

Exclamation PORSCHE CAYENNE PEPPER!

wirunner,

The above article comes from the latest Porsche Newsletter from Sunset Imports in Oregon.

It's the Pepper Forum.

Seems that you and Larry are just confused.

BTW, becoming a Rennlist Member gives you more weight on this forum.

I think Larry would agree with me but he's dead. It's a P!g for sure. Let's put it to a vote! If P!g wins maybe we can even change the website to pigpen.rennlist.com. Now that would be something.

As a side note, I don't have a P!g. It died. Kinda like Larry.

Clearly what we have here is a failure to communicate.

So, in an effort to settle this once and for all, I have enlisted the service of a well respected neutral individual....
