Cayenne vs BMW X5
We are looking at maybe buying another used SUV, something 2-3 years old. So it is either a Cayenne S or a BMW 5 with the 6 cylinder. I've always had good luck with the BMW 6 cylinder in their 3 series and was told to stay away from the 8 cylinder X5s. So how does the X5 compare against the Cayenne? Pros and Cons?
Thanks

Drive both and the difference will be obvious. I have only driven the previous generation X5 (2006 and before) extensively, which I think is a lot more truckish than the Cayenne. The current generation X5 I drove briefly handles better (more car like) but it's also a lot bigger. Either case, the Cayenne is way more sportier when it comes to handling. Interior space wise, it's smaller than both X5. So I guess it depends on what you are going to use it for?

You are on a Cayenne forum, so expect most everyone to tell you that the Cayenne is better.

This will be wife's daily driver to replace her aging 2000 BMW 328i.
How is the reliability and quirks with the car? I want something reliable and low maintenance since she puts a lot of miles on the road.
TIA

Cayenne!
Lots of good deals out there. Maybe you could even get a good deal on a turbo.

Based on your avatar, are you a DIYer? If so, I think you will be happier with the X5. Although I have not worked on my Cayenne, based on what I read here, the Cayenne was designed not to be DIY friendly. And parts are more expensive than BMW or MBZ. You have very limited choices when it comes to maintenance parts other than dealer.

Yeah, I am a major DIYer... In case you haven't seen http://p-car.com
Lastest DIY a Ferrari 360 Modena F1 http://p-car.com/ferrari/diy/clutch/album/
As far as I know we were the first ones who have successfully changed the clutch on 360 F1 transmission system without a SD2 Ferrari computer.

I know this is usually a silly question on this forum, but, since I see the Rover listed, I'll ask - any plans to take this vehicle off pavement any further than Junior's soccer field? If so, the Cayenne has a substantial advantage, assuming the right wheels/tires.

The fit and finish of the Cayenne S is FAR superior to the BMW. You get the V8, which is AWESOME. Fully loaded 2006 CS can be had for around $35K. The beauty of the PIG is that is does everything a SUV should do, and it does it extremely well. Drives like a sports car, and the thing is a tank.
Go to carmax, check them both out side-by-side, the choice is clear.

I've had both and the BMW will be more than adequate for your wife's needs plus the in-line 6 is one of the best on the road. There are so many X5's around you should be able to pick one up for cheap. If you get an X5 go for the 06, last year of the 1st generation and a better design in my opinion. BTW I have an 09 X5 diesel right now and it rocks! Love the engine, not thrilled with the interior design....iDrive...Ugg! If you can't spring for an 08 Cayenne I would pass due to transmission lag, throttle lag etc on the 1st generation.
BTW Robin I just had my 993 out yesterday in the beautiful sunshine for a blast and I'm loving the RSR's!
Thanks

Cayenne S
I don't know about that Zack, your wife drives the Cayenne and I agree with others here, the Cayenne S is much better.
So if he was considering a Cayenne S, I would say go for it. I won't even bother discussing V6's with these vehicles, V8 is the only way to go.
Bang for Buck, mentioned already especially for the 2006 CS, which he can still find CPO for 35-37K.
And dare I say, put the X5 next to the CS, really does one need to even think about it, the X5 is a goofy looking BMW at best! Dime a dozen out there too.
The 2006 CS I drive daily is by far the best daily I have ever driven.
Now, if I could just get my hands on the 993 for a daily spring to autumn...

The requirements were for reliability and maintenance, and for that the X5 wins. A 06 X5 can be had much cheaper than an S. Don't get me wrong, the Cayenne is great but the X5 is a hell of a deal, plus the in-line 6 is bullet proof and the transmission operation is much, much better than the 1st gen. Cayenne.
