Question Which to buy: 04 Turbo vs. 05 S

For about the same price I can get either of these. Very similar configurations/option. Both are CPO for 2yrs/50K from purchase date so warranty is not an issue...

How would you decide?

2004 Cayenne Turbo
40,000 miles
Titanium with Stone/Steel Grey smooth leather
Heated seats front/rear (standard)
Wood steering wheel (i don't care much for this)
Porsche Entry and Drive
19" Cayenne Design wheels
Bi-Xenon headlights (standard)
PASM (standard)
Park assist (standard)
PCM
Rollup sunscreen (no big deal)

2005 Cayenne S
37,000 miles
Crystal Silver metallic with black leather interior
Heated seats front/rear, plus steering wheel
Interior detail painted to match exterior
PASM
Park assist
PCM
20" Cayenne Design wheels

Cheers,
Eric

people on here will say get the newest one you can get but I would go with the turbo. Just makes sure that all the recalls were done and alot of the **** prolbems were fix. An 04 turbo is not as bad as they tend to think i have had one now I got a 06CTTS, but it's your call what it comes down too.

I think it all depends on your need for speed.

Also - ask the dealer when the 2004 turbo was built. If it is late in the build cycle, it will most likely have fewer problems.

Thanks. What would be considered late in the MY04 build cycle?

The 05 will have the DVD NAV rather than the CD based NAV- a big difference. Since both have PASM, which I think is mandatory, I'd go for the '05 S... FWIW...

December 2012, the last day of the Mayan calendar is a safe bet.

Never a car with a manufacturing date on either side of summer shutdown....ever.

My 2004 Cayenne S was built in May of 2004, and it has been "relatively" problem free. I think that the 2005s were build the following month.

I have the CD based navigation in my Cayenne, and with the recent CD updates, it's not too bad. Not as good as the DVD nav, but not bad.

Is there a 3rd option (none of the above)?

No?, oh well then, pick either one, doesn't matter.

They are basically identical, except for turbochargers and BiXenons.

Personally, if I weren't in love (Love and Cayenne....hmmn, bacon) with either one, I'd keep looking. I've been told there is no shortage of used Cayennes.

BTW, you do know what the word 'hesitation' means, correct?

It's fun to read the jokes about the Cayenne.

But in more seriousness I have to say that Porsche has always done things in a slightly odd way.

When they built 911 it was a death trap and ended up with lead weights in the front bumper - people said it was stupid, and that the engine was in completely in the wrong place. It evolved through the decades and ended up a fantastic car. Porsche nearly ended up broke, though, because the cars were too expensively made. So they fixed that, cheapened the construction of the cars and still managed to move them forwards, losing only a little of the integrity of the earlier cars but retaining the quirky elements and essential benefits of the designs.

With Cayenne, Porsche have designed and built an equally fantastic but strange machine. The car answers more needs than any other vehicle I can think of.

I need 4 doors.
I need to be able to tow my circuit car to and from the track.
I need to get up the slippery hill right outside my house in the winter.
I need to be able to get dozens of boxes into my car at a moments notice for work reasons.
I like to be comfortable on a long journey.
I like to be able to string a series of corners together once in a while and feel the car react in a sporty way.
I like the sound of a thoroghbred V8.
I like owning a car that I love the looks of but which others cannot understand - I don't want to follow the crowd because I'm a natural contrarian.

If you view the Cayenne as just another SUV then of course you can become negative about it - but the Cayenne isn't just another SUV. It's a complete marvel, and I absolutely love it.

I know that this view of the Cayenne might not be 'form' but I thought I'd post it because it's how I feel.

I believe the hesitation or turbo lag was "fixed" on one of the TSB's. Drive both and let us know.
