Default The Porsche Experience - $400 key replacement

You may have noticed that your keys have a notch at the base. I assume this is so they will break away in case they are stuck and receive a lot of lateral stress.

In my case, it snapped for no apparent reason. I naively called up my dealer to inquire about getting a replacement. I expected a flogging but I set my expectations way too low.
I found out it will cost about $400 for a replacement!!!

That price is so offensive that I will now submit it under warranty. Does anybody else have any experience with this issue of keys breaking?

Thanks,

That sounds about right. My key was actually never break. But I lost my spare key. I think the replacement from my dealer here in Tacoma, WA was about $350.

Is that for the entire key and new fob w/ remote or just the metal key part and programing?

Who is going out of town soon that has a nice '08 Turbo, preferably black?

I am--black Turbo S. But, a key from eBay won't help you start it. Mudman is referring to the purchase of a blank key from eBay that cold then be cut and programmed to work on your vehicle.

Here is a replacement key blade on eBay for $6:

Here is a full replacement key and fob for $70:

Hmm...I was looking for an '08. But if you're in Wisconsin, we may have a deal, since that's pretty convenient for me.

Seriously, though, I do wonder how badly they would hit you for cutting the key and programming the fob.

Also, I don't want to hijack the thread, but I have occasional periods where locking/unlocking with the fob isn't possible. It isn't the battery, either. It just "fixes itself" after a while. I wonder if anyone else has had this or knows what causes it.

Default On a different, but nonetheless related note.....

Where are good on line sites to buy Porsche parts? Preferably at a lower cost than most stealerships?

Dont forget that wherever you get it from the dealer still needs to program it with your car

Happy ending. It is covered under warranty. A great dealer makes all the difference.

How did you do that??? I tried to get my key covered and they won't do it calling it "normal wear and tear". BTW, my CTT is a keyless ignition and entry car so I don't touch the key...
