Default ODB II software?

I have a Ross-Tech cable, used for my prior S4 and my wifes Touareg, and plugged it into my CTT and it appears to have a connection (it has a green light that glows when you plug in).

So, I was looking for a basic software download to go with it, something that could help me read any codes the car is throwing, and also change a few settings, like turn the seat belt chime off. I did a quick search on ODB in this forum but only found some talk about flashes (Revo, GIAC, etc).

Would Durametric work? They claim there software only works with their cable. Humm... http://www.durametric.com/download.aspx

To my knowledge the cable contains the key for the software you use so no it wouldn't work.

I just bought the Ross Tech for my GTI & A4. I asked about the Cayenne when I ordered (mine isn't here yet) and they said "maybe it will work." The cable doesn't fit my Boxster S.

Well, I downloaded the software, will install and see what happens this weekend. Worst case it doesn't work right. The cost to buy a new cable and software is $250, and based on the usefulness I had with my VAG-COM I'll be bucking up for it if this doesn't work.

Just wanted to see what others use or do...

I've used the VAG-COM system for years on my VW-Audi vehicles and it does have a "generic" mode to check for OBD engine codes as I used it on my Lotus Elise and it worked for a CEL code which I cleared. It won't do anymore than that. I also have the Durametric system we use on my son's Cayman S and we used to use on the Cayenne but it has it's own cord. Doubt the VAG-COM cord will work with Durametric's software- they have to have a way to make you pay something for their software!
Durametric is adding more stuff and is upgradeable just like VAG-COM. You just upload the latest software from their website.
