My 08' has a change in the oil change interval to 12,000 using Mobil 1. I followed the break in instructions (no flooring it or using cruise) for the first few thousand miles and it runs great and burns very little oil.

I agree (!) with Lewis - I have seen the factory limiter testing the motors as they roll off the line....AWESOME

When I took delivery of my 06 S the same DAY I picked it up I drove 1200klm home (Gold Coast to Sydney) I just varied the RPM - not the speed. I drove the car hard form day 1 and it used very little oil. I had an oil change at 12 months (IIRC around 12000Klm) and had no issues other than it being totalled a few months ago by HAIL.

I plan to do the same when my new "08 arrives in 2 weeks - picking up from the same dealer and driving home over a few days witht the family.

I hope this helps,

SImon.

Good luck with the new Cayenne- you'll love it!

FWIW, the Cayenne is really new school, it computes it's oil change interval biased on many factors. I'm guessing elapsed time, mileage, load, RPM usage, length of trips along with other factors are used by the vehicles computer to determine when the service should be done. The new BMW's have the same thing.

Personally, although I come from the really old school (3,000 mi. oil changes) I have evolved to the point of doing an interim oil change at the 1 yr/10k mi. point and NOT reseting the service computer when I do it. I just don't believe in going 2 yrs. between oil changes on a vehicle I hope to keep for years to come. I'm not a "lease and dump" car guy.

I didn't re-set the computer when the oil computer when we did the oil change at 10,000, and the computer said "service now" at pretty much exactly 20,000 miles (my wifes primary driver, so I didn't see exactly when the light came on).

It could be coincidence that the manual says to do the first oil change at 20,000 miles and the computer calculated based on use to do it at exactly 20,000 miles. I do think my BMW (2000 model) says to do the oil change in about the same mileage as the book, but I have heard the computers put "some thought" into recommending changes based on driving. The computer could be defaulted to say to change the oil at the lesser of (1) a mileage based on short trips/hard driving or whatever or (2) the manual recommended intervals, and with our highway/city mix we never need to do it any sooner than the manual recommends...

Lately I have been using cruise control a lot because of a bad knee, @ 50+ K do you think it's still bad for the engine?

if this is a stupid question, pardon me.

I didnt bother much with the breakin but have replaced my oil every 10K and just completed its 9th oil change. Doesnt burn a drop. I agree with the comment not going longer than a year however just incase you dont put 10k a year on.

Cruise Control is fine to use, I use it all the time to keep me from driving faster than I should be driving. In the posting that I mentioned NOT to use cruise control was for the break-in period only. It's not good on the engine to maintain a set RPM for any extended period of time during break-in (first 2,000 mi.). Personally I would try to avoid using it for the first 4 - 5k mi., but that's just me. But w/ 50K on the clock you can use it to your knee's content.

Not a stupid question at all.
