Mine does the same thing, there is a TSB for lubing the brake release cable which I assume is to fix this issue, I've not have a chance to try it.
Pull out the release all the way and apply grease with a small brush to the sliding service. I will give it a try when it warms up and let you know if it fixed the problem.
Any way to replace just the faulty gas strut? $500 it pathetic for a $10 part. We are not discussing a piece of electronics. The gas struts for the rear hatch didn't last and I don't remember them costing that much. The strut easily comes off with retaining clips.
