Need some help please...
Last night when the wife left the house in her 2004 Cayenne S she started hearing a knocking noise and a small vibration coming from where the transmission is....and this only happens if she is going over 30 MPH...and sometimes it doesnt do it...we live in Idaho and have no dealer within 300 miles....I thought at first it might have been some ice in the wheel well but we thawed it in a heated shop over night...still making the noise...any help would be greatly appreciated before I drive to SLC,Utah this weekend with my porsche on a trailer....
Thanks in advance,
Jason

welcome
welcome to the wonderful world of naked porsche ownership. there are no airy castles with high turrets, just rod serling waiting to jump out from behind the nearby pillar with a new "consider the plight of this poor (and getting poorer) porsche owner with the following problem"

I know droptop... droptop is a former pig owner.. he is making a funny... you don't have a sweater problem (cardigan)... you have a cardan "shaft" (no pun intended) problem.. search cardan.. sadly, probably true.. however, many dealers and PAG will help with replacement read the threads.. if you're still in warranty no big deal.. if out of warranty.. PUSH for them to eat it (or as much as they can).

Jason,
It sounds exactly what we heard on our CS last year. it was the drive shaft coupling coming apart, and was replaced under an extended warranty. I think the shop had said it wold have been around $1000 for me to pay.
good luck

droptop.
Ok so we understand you had a bad experience. I am not sure that your experience mirrors many others or whether your tolerance level is not as high as others but there appears to be many people that are satisfied with their trucks; expecially 2006 and later. If you buy a new line of cars from a company that has never built anything remotely like the car you are buying I am not sure that you can expect perfection or anything close to it. I have always liked the look of the Cayenne but held off until 2008 to buy it. It has been flawless.
I do anticipate that I will have repair bills, it is a complicated, high performance car. I paid for the car up front but am budgeting for maintenance costs in the future as well. If you get bored easily and want to change cars or if you can't afford the maintenance on a complicated high performance machine this is not the car for you. You can go buy a Chevy or a Nissan or something like that.

...you most probably have the following:
...faulty transfer case servo motor.
- 0.5 hours labor
- P/N 955-624-601-00
...the potentiometer in the motor becames intermittent at low/freezing temps...
If you WAIT and do not do it now ASAP, next thing will go in about 3-6 mo the whole transfer case, starving of oil. In 3-6 mo slowly braking aparts transfer case WILL develop an oil leek and then WILL desintegrate, probably, while you'll be driving the thing on a hiway at above 50 mi/h...Cay will give you two error messages on a driver cluster display:
1. all-wheel drive system faulty - Workshop
2. as a consequence to the above error, PSM failure - Workshop.

I just talked to local shop that works on Porsche vehicles and it is the driveline or what Porsche calls cardan shaft...looks like the part is 700.00 and the labor is about 200.00
Atleast i dont have to take it 300 miles to get it fixed.....must be pretty common because the places they called to get the part had plenty in stock...
I will be keeping the Porsche, I was just a little mad about the whole deal....I have only had it for 3 months and have had to do the front brakes and now this....brakes were easy, did them myself, brake pads were like 105.00 with my mechanic brothers discount....
