Default Cayenne Asking for Service At 12.5K Miles

Recently my '06 Cayenne S with 10.5K miles begun displaying a reminder upon startup saying service is due in 2K miles.

I didn't find anything in the maintenance manual about service this early. I know the 1st service is due at 20K miles or 2 years. Does anyone know if the internal computer also keeps track of its age? It is a fairly simple calculation to project (based on mileage to date) in how many miles the truck will hit the 2 year mark. In my case that would be May 2008 and the 2K reminder is in the ballpark.

I'm inclined to wait until I actually hit the 20K mark.

Mine told me I needed to service it at the 2 year mark. It only had about 6,500 miles at the time...

My 08 CS requires service at 12k or so miles. Did a dealer re-prog your warning?

No I haven't been to the dealer for any kind of engine or tranny service yet. The only time I was there was for 15 minutes to fix a plastic trim piece. So I believe it is still on its original software from 2006.

Wow, that is even sooner than mine. Maybe my theory about the computer knowing its own age is right. Did you get service done or did you wait?

When I picked up the 08 CT they had changed the first service from 20K to 12K by annotating the maintenance manual. I suspect yours is the two year trigger. I think I would want the oil changed after two years anyway. Porsche may be rethinking the 20K interval on service.

We have had our car since april 2007 & it has 15,000 miles. We haven't received any message (I wonder if the 2 year service indication if there is a time clock starts when the vehicle leaves the factory or when it is "put in service")

By the way, I thought the 20,000 1st service was long as well, and had the oil changed a little after 10,000- especially since this is the first oil change (I know "production methods are better today" for building motors, but I still believe motors go through a break in period). I had my independant do the oil change for our cayenne and my 911- for less than the dealer wanted for just the cayenne!

].... but did he change the "pollen filter"?

Is this a new Cayenne? Is it still in warranty? If you have an alpha/beta, you could be out of warranty based on date but not miles.. In either case, I'd only caution you that when you go to sell your Cayenne that not having all service done at the dealer could hurt your resell significantly and/or void your warranty (if some other big problem shows up and they blame the independent). I've found that some service is "negotiable" to price (dealer does use coupons, too). I doubt seriously that I would buy a used Cayenne that hadn't been serviced at the dealer and wasn't CPO'ed and/or had an ext. warranty in force. Quite a different story on a way past CPO and/or older 911's... great independed ex-dealer Porsche techs are great resources and are certainly worth a lot to many on this board over the dealer techs.

... but the Cayenne is a different animal it has proven to be quite quirky, quite expensive and quite unique to the PAG line-up. My $.02. I think some here would tell you the same.. a few bucks on an oil change could really hurt down the road... although some would say depreciating "pigs" are still "pigs".

Frankly, I was so insulted at the price they wanted for an oil change- and given that this is an "extra" oil service- I didn't think it would matter. I know at some point I will need to use the dealer as if something beyond oil changes/brakes kind of thing were needed I'd want the expertise of a dealer- but to charge almost 300% of what an independant charges is just rediculous. I keep detailed records on every car we own and pass them on to the next owner. If a potential buyer can't understand the rationale for not using the dealer on this car on some routine maintence, well I'll have to find another buyer.

As of now, I don't have a game plan on how long we'll keep the truck, or even at which point I'll take it to the dealer- if the 20K service at the dealer is $600-700 they can keep their $25 off coupon and I'll go to my independant again. So far (knock on wood) this has been a great truck and we love it! I like it more than I thought I would...the only alternative for me is a 2005-6 x5 as the new BMWs are Fugly inside and out. (yes I have an "old" style 5-series- 2000 model)

on all counts.

Why can't BMW get their s-t together and come up with a truly ultimate driving machine already!

The 2 year "SERVICE" indication starts 2 years from the production date.
