There is a huge difference between a Cayenne and a Porsche.
Don't let a Cayenne ownership "experience" discourage you from owning a Porsche.
(FWIW, Rome is very happy with his 993C2S.....how could you not be?)
After Larry died, I said I would never again cast a shadow in a Porsche dealership showroom (and I really love my local Porsche dealer.....fantastic guys), I passed on the Carrera GT, passed on the 997GT3 (RS).
There are LOTS of very interesting Porsches (before the reign of the evil Dr W and his apprentice Peter the Great) that I am sure would make you very happy.
Like the old expression "**** happens"....well Cayenne Happens......

Not sure what Cayenne to get if you only have $40K. Caveat Emptor. Just get a pre-purchase inspection would be my advice.
As for Cayenne and Porsche and reliability...if you get a lemon, its hard to get that taste out of your mouth, but IMHO, I have owned and driven many, many Land Rovers and I would take a clapped out Porsche Cayenne over a brand new LR any day of the week.
Actually, if I had a budget of $40K on a 4x4 I would buy a brand new Toyota and stash the rest of the cash.

the first time..
i test drove a LR, it failed (i mean rolled to a stop totally dead) about a mile away from the dealer. we walked back. i took this as a sign from GOD.
i just don't think i am porsche material. i believe that when i pay this much for a car, it should be nearly perfect, and when it has a problem, i shouldn't have to be the one to teach the dealership about their own product. i will say that boardwalk made alot of mileage with me in the way that they handled the window on the porsche.
i will probably stay with miatas and fx/landcruiser/something else. i didn't really fit in with the local porsche crowd anyway<G>. airplane drivers tend to be less forgiving on their hardware, having it quit 20,000ft above I-5 can ruin your WHOLE day. i don't expect that with a car, but i got 269k out of my supra with about 1800 bucks in unscheduled maintenance. i don't so much begrudge the maintenance cost on the porsche, as i begrudge the fact that they couldn't fix the bloody thing at ALL, or even admit to a problem at one dealership.

Agree - Private aircraft (been there done that) = Black Hole in the sky that sucks ALL your available cash..
Other than Naked Alpha/Beta Cayennes... at least other Porsches only suck slightly more of your cash than any other high end car!

Totally OT....
Haven't you guys heard of the saying:
"If it floats, flies or ***** - RENT it! Way cheaper in the long run........ "
Just my $0.02999 c worth (adjusted for inflation)
Simon.

known in the biz...
as the 3 F rule, although the way i heard it was
"if it flies, floats or f$$ks, it is always cheaper to rent than own..."
as opposed to the 7P principle
"Proper planning prevents **** poor performance" or
"Proper Planning and Preparation Prevent **** Poor Performance" (depending on your counting methodology)
which is obviously one porsche never heard of..
