Default Traded in the S for a GL450

On January 1, we traded in the S for a MB GL450. At the end of the day, the Cayenne was too small for our needs. I wanted to hold on for another year, but my wife convinced me that she didn't want to pay:

$700 for tires
$1000 for rear brakes
$x00 for 30k service

My wife also couldn't stand the stupid tranny immediately shifting to 3rd gear leaving no power accelerating out of turns.

GL450 likes:
Power-folding 3rd row seats
Power tailgate (2 level adjustable height)
DVD based Nav is fantastic compared with CD based 04 Pepper
7 speed tranny is smooth and quicker to respond than Tiptronic
Cruise control has 1 and 5 mph adjustments
With 3rd row flat, the cargo area is huge
Deceptively fast

GL450 dislikes:
Rides like an ocean liner

Cayenne S likes:
A true Porsche SUV, meaning handling, braking and fast

Cayenne S dislikes:
Too small for a family of 4
Tiptronic "thinks" too much
Ate brakes (rotors) too fast

At least I received a decent to good amount on the trade, and bought the GL450 for under MSRP out the door.

I am now Porsche-less for the first time in 7 years.

But I'll be back soon!

Enjoy your Peppers and Happy New Year!

Yeah the maint costs are a bit ridiculous... if the X5 wasn't SOOOO mommi-minivan-ish I may have went into an X5. BMW financing has better lease numbers than Porsche and no maint. costs.

You can lease a 65K BMW for the same price as a 58K Porsche.

The GL's are neat but it wouldn't make much sense for my family which consists of one Boarder Collie. Mercedes has done away with the low range transmission, which I really need. But they are neat. I would opt for the diesel if I had to pull a trailor.

I wish Mercedes would build a pickup on the GL frame. That would be cool.

eh... I considered the original G wagon before we bought the CTT -- a little to hip hoppish.
Having experienced both Pcar and MB electronics, I would have avoided the power everything option... just more to break. Power lift gate and rear seats fall into the same category as electronic adjustable seat belt height adjustment... controlled by a button on your seat!!! Who asks for this stuff?
