Navteq builds 'custom images' for each car manufacturer from their extensive library of mapping data (this way people who have really good NAV discs can't share them with people who have really poor NAV coverage discs).
This is how manufacturer (insert name here) wants it to be.
And BTW, they also do this so they can get $$$ back when you buy new NAV CD's.

Let me get this right - Porsche will update the older CD based units, because the newer CD versions won't work. But those with the newer CD nav units are SOL. Won't get the DVD upgrade, but can't get updated data from NAVTEC either.

Well - it's the end of a long day at the office. Thanks for allowing me a little entertainment.
This one was much better than the Nor'Easter of 1997 and the prank of 26 inches of snow.
Happy April 1st - You guys are too smart - or I need to be more careful about spelling Navteq. I'll go with the former.

Thats not how I read it, heres my interpretation, I am sure if anyone knows any better they will chime in (horatio ?)
Some hardware issue in early versions of PCM2 supplied by Becker were only designed to work with a then current CD Image from Navteq, presumably some kind of hardware decryption or decoding.
A long came the demand for Nav in all Pcars Newer CD versions were released ready for a future master plan followed by DVD versions.
The later CD hardware works with the long term Navteq deal but that leaves the early units.
Where Cost of 1 data set = X and Cost of replacing early PCM hardware = Y
If Y is less than X, and PAG is faced with 2X choose Y.
The later CD version will support the newer data set so no cost to PAG.

W592: Audio Amplifier Easter Egg
It has come to the attention of PCNA that a 'feature' was designed into all MOST DSP amplifiers (by the designer of this module.....if you knew him you'd understand why he'd do something like this) which will cause the vehicle to simultaneously:
A. lock the doors
B. cause the horn to self destruct
C. open the rear hatch
D. display the "!" permanently on the dashboard
if the vehicle goes over a bump anytime on April 1st.
The vehicle will also open all windows, spontaneously shed all 'stainless' steel trim/badging, cause the seatbelts to retract like a boa constrictor and play at volume setting "11" the entire soundtrack to the movie 'Monty Python and the Holy Grail' (which was embedded into the MOST DSP amplifier's flash memory....again by the same individual).
PCNA is currently "negotiating" with this individual (or at least the majority of his multiple personalities" in the hopes of resolving this situation.
We would like to thank you for your continued patience as we develop this vehicle.
Bravo Shaumus......
