By the way, for those who had the vibration and it was fixed, if you can post what it was that caused the vibration to occur that would be helpful (driveshaft, steering mechanism, wheel re-balance, tire defect, incorrect air pressure, etc etc.)

Question

andrew,
are you inferring wheel/tire/road force balance driven vibrations
or
cardan shaft (MY03-MY03 TSB/recall) vibrations

They advised two times already that the balancing was in spec, I have the 18" Conti's. I am switching to summer tires, so since I had the 18" rims anyhow I changed over to Pirelli Scorpion Ice & Snow for the winter, had the tires road force balanced on a Hunter machine, and still have vibrations from 62 MPH and up.

You need to read all the posts on road force.. 99% of the tire vibration/shimmy felt in the steering wheel is because of tires being within manufacturer's road force specs. but too high for the Cayenne's drivetrain steering wheel linkage IMO. Had it on Conti's and Bridgestones.. eliminated with Michelin Diamaris that had LOW road force. Cardan shaft is a rare problem that as far as I can tell only was a problem in '03 and early build '04's. I now have 20,000 miles on Michelins and still no vibration/shimmy.. I will probably get 10K more out of them... IF and that is IF I keep the beast (I have no ext. warr. at the moment) and am at 57,500 miles.

P.S. I did NOT vote because the answers are not appropriate. This is not a dealer problem IMO - it was annoying but hardly a problem of the scale of other "glitches" and true manufacturing defects... frankly, it is a manufacturing tolerance that is too broad for this vehicle. Get low Road Force tires on your next set and voila' no problem.... oh, and get some Kool-Aid too.

Sure, I'll be the only left doing the 'Cayenne warranty skinny dip'

I think from these stats we can see why PCNA takes the attitude it does sometimes. Its early yet but the % is in their favor.

Well part of C i think, dealers overall are ok but some suck.

Given the numbers perhaps they risk it as in their favor

its NOT !, not here.

Had it on my Cayenne S, one of the very first delivered, I might also add, and was never fixed. I had Sport techno 20s with Michelin Diamaris tires.

Bothered me enough to sell it and move on to something else.

Just wondering... is it perhaps a characteristic of S and Turbo models only... i.e. extra weight on the front end, as well as larger rims/tires (18, 19, and 20)?

The V6 models are about 200 pounds less and only have 17" rims.

Anyone with a V6 with >20k miles that can verify? So far, I haven't experienced any vibration... and I have 9k miles on my Cayenne. As I add time and mileage, I'll let everyone know if I begin to experience any vibration or ride issues.

I'm about ready for my first shot of Kool Aid!

I've had this issue since new - now at 3k - and just replaced the original 19' with 20' sport technos on Diamaris. I am schedule to bring it in again (3rd time!) on Monday. Lets see how it goes...

Maybe I should downgrade to 17'???

Although I cannot discount the V6 vs S TT relationship, based on all of the posts I have read over the years, I think the car is just hard to set up right.

The wheels, the position of the tires on the wheels, the correct road force balance of the wheels, the alignment and, on early numbers, the carden shaft all create the shimy.

I had it bad on delivery. The Shaft was one fix then alignment, new tires and correct RFB. The dealer had no idea how critical the set up was (also VW dealers) until they went thru it with mine.

It has not happened since then. 9K on the clock by the time it was fixed,

My slight vibration at around 70 MPH was fixed by a re-balance (that was not covered by warranty). The dealer stated that the wheels were out of balance and that is what had caused the vibration. Smooth sailing now.
