Question Cayenne or Touareg.

Do not own a SUV but a friend and I have an ongoing argument.

I say the Touareg is built by P on the same production as the Touareg. He disagrees.

Any written matter on the subject??

Raw body shells come off the same line. The shells then go to the respective assembly plants which are completely seperate. The Toureg is NOT built by Porsche. They each build thier own on the same basic platform.

The Porsche engine is built in Stuttgart though by Porsche. Don't know about the Touareg.

Brent:

I don't believe the Toureg plant is completely separate. The Cayenne bodies are built at the VW plant in Bratislava (Czech Republic) and then shipped to Leipzig where they are married up with the engine, drivetrain, chassis, etc. I believe the Toureg final assembly is done at the same plant in Bratislava - it wouldn't seem to make any sense for them to ship it off somewhere else. Porsche, OTOH, insisted on having "made in Germany" so that's why the final assembly is done back in der Vaterland.

Despite shared production and parts, they are totally different animals. I always considered them one and the same, therefore never considered a Cayenne. After finally driving one, I no longer was interested in the Touareg. I was strictly comparing the air suspension Touareg with the PASM Cayenne. At a similar price point, though, the Touareg would be hard to beat.

Touareg V8 engine is Audi, don't know about the 6 cyl. I think the 6cyl is all VW except for badges.

I drove a Cayenne V6 loaner and even the steering was different, it was like a spayed pepper.

Porsche reworks the head on the V6 to get more HP than the standard VW VR6 engine. But VW is putting a new V6 in the Toureg that will have more HP than the Porsche variant. I expect Porsche will up the bidding on their end to get back ahead.

I wonder if VW works the top end to PAG specs. It seems it may be very expensive to bring the car to deutschland to rework a head. We all know how PAG loves to spend money.

The car body (without engine) goes straight from Bratislava to Leipzig. IIRC, Porsche reworks the VW V6 engines in Stuttgart and then sends them on to Leipzig.

The two are extremely similar in reality. There was an article in a German magazine where they mentioned that Ferninand Piech (Pres of Audi and nephew of Prof Porsche) has a Cayenne that he had them put a Touareg interior in.

VW does most of the Cayenne assembly in Bratislava on the same assembly lines as the Touareg. The Cayennes are shipped to Leipzig where Porsche adds the engines and ships them out.

The suspensions on both are identical, except that the Cayennes are tuned to be more of a sport oriented ride. I should know, I pulled the stock suspension off my Touareg and bolted the Cayenne suspension right up.

For what it's worth...

How would you characterize the follow up service dealer network?

I think a more accurate analogy would be

Cayenne = Rolex
Touareg = Tudor

Only the relationship would be flipped - Rolex makes Tudor watches, but VW makes most of the Cayenne.
