Post differences in N spec Diamaris 20" tires

Stumbled across this while searching the tirerack website.....yes, it's once again time for new summer tires (275 40 R20) for the Cayenne.....40K miles on the clock.

Michelin N0 4x4 Diamaris (N spec Porsche OEM) has a UTQG of: 140 A A; max load 1904 lbs, YR speed rating
(140, Yikes!)

Michelin N1 4x4 Diamaris (N spec Porsche OEM) has a UTQG of: 220 AA A; max load 2094 lbs, YR speed rating

Michelin NON N spec 4x4 Diamaris has a UTQG of: 220 AA A; same UTQG as N1 spec; however 1847 lbs max load and WR speed rating

Also of interest is that the Conti 4x4 SportContact is OEM shown/listed as "Original Equipment" but is not "N" rated.

What is the difference between the NO and N1 specification? All things equal, the N1 looks like the superior product -- higher load rating, higher wear rating; same price.

My 'C' came with 20" Conti's; got a new pair for the front from the dealer because of alignment issues a year ago, but have been running with a used set of Bridgestones on 18" turbos from ebay, and now Pirelli Ice and Snows. Will switch back to the Conti's in a few weeks. While I have no need for new tires now, folks here seem to like the Diamaris, but does anyone have experience with the N1 version? Is this now the tire of choice for 20" wheels?

BTW, I'm crossing my fingers when I mount the new Conti's; hope no vibration.

Hey Phil,

Do you recommend the Pirelli Ice and Snows as year round, cause right now I have the Geolander HT-S g052 and really satisfied but that came from my V6 ,it's not XL rated and only H speed rated. I know the pirelli have higher review in snow than the geolander but let me know your experiences on dry pavement with the pirelli..thanks

Alex,

I like the Pirelli Ice and Snows very much for the winter. It's excellent on the snow, cold temps, and rain, but it's a winter tire. I would not use it on hot pavement; get a summer tire for the summer or an all season tire. There are compromises in a one size (all season tire) fits all, but the one size fits all is not a winter tire. BTW, I put about 5Kmi on the Pirelli's and the tread looks new.

Regards,
Phil

The number on the N rating is the number of times a specific tire size from a particular tire manufacturer has gone through the homologation process.
