Default Trailer newbie questions

I plan to haul my track car to track events a few times a year, but need to know what the Cayenne S is/should be set up for.

The wiring adapter is not installed, I'll hit the dealer up for that.

I've also read the light adapter may not be pre-installed. How can I check?

Will I need a separate brake controller for the trailer, or is that supposed to be in the hitch bundle?

Love this ride, when i can get it from my wife! Looking forward to towing the car to the track and not packing the tires in the back seat...

1. Your Cayenne should have the factory tow package (~$590, option code 1D6). This includes the physical tow hitch (below rear bumper) and the tow control electronics module (controls trailer lights) which is in the rear sidewell of the cargo compartment. If not factory installed option, it can be added for ~$1500-$2000 (lots of labor required....it's been done/discussed here a few times in previous posts)

2. If 1D6 is on your vehicle, your dealer should have/will install a 7pin Pollack connector in the receptacle next to the 2" receiver hitch, driver side (there will currently be a blank off plate if the 7pin is not installed). Simple 5 minute job, just plugs in.

3. You WILL need a brake controller, as the factory tow contol module is for trailer LIGHTS only. There have been many posts here explaining the choices and the 4pin connector under the dash where the brake controller plugs in (connector P/N,'s pinout, etc):

QTY: PARTS:
2 000979228
1 1J0972782
1 Brake Controller (your choice)

Get the first two items from a Volkswagon Dealer; Porsche
does not carry the connectors or wires.

First, remove under tray panel under dash on driver side.
Find 20 torx in center of panel and remove it.

Drop panel down and look for a 4 prong square connector on left side of dash, hanging off of main harness. Might be wrapped with grey foam.

Install the ends of the wires 0009799228
in the 4 slots in the connector, part number 1J0972782.

CONNECTOR IN CAR: WIRE COLOR:

TERMINAL 1: BROWN
TERMINAL 2: RED Check fuse box right
F19, make sure it has a 30 AMP fuse in it.
TERMINAL 3: BLACK/ RED
TERMINAL 4: BLUE

WIRING TO CONTROLLER:

TERMINAL 1: GROUND
TERMINAL 2: B+ POWER ALL THE TIME
TERMINAL 3: STOP LIGHT
TERMINAL 4: TRAILER BRAKE

4. I pull a 20' enclosed aluminum V nose (#2400 empty) and my Cup car(#2650 or so) with the Cayenne. You can forget about using 6th gear (useless at this weight unless zero grade). Mileage is about 9-10mpg (26 gallon tank, so ~200 miles before Refil Warning is displayed on dash). Ride/sway is OK (I have PASM, set to normal/normal).

5. Join rennlist. The search function (which answers all your questions like this and more) is well worth the $40.

Best of luck with your Cayenne......

Excellent info, thanks. I'll definitely sign up, more useful info here than other boards I've seen.

We do have the tow package, and the missing adapter. We have VW here in town, but the Porsche dealer is 90 miles away, so getting these should be easy.

I will likely start with an aluminum open trailer. We'll see...

Thanks agin,
Dan
