Code reader
Is there a code reader that can code replacement parts?
After replacing a headlight assembly, the headlight works, but there are errors, because the headlight assembly needs to be coded to the car.
I have a foxwell, but it won't code new parts to the car.

The only thing that can code the headlight module (assuming we're talking 957 here) is PIWIS2 or 3. Nothing else. This is specific to the 957 headlights - most other stuff other modules can do, but not headlights.
I've rented out my PIWIS to others specifically for this in the past. Also have programmed the modules and sent out a working set, but that usually requires a pair unless you know for sure that your other module has latest sofrware already coded to it (PIWIS will only update everything to the latest versions).

Mine is a 2008 GTS Headlights are expensive, the wiring inside the headlight ages and the insulation falls off. After repairing the headlight wiring, I get a headlight code, but the headlight seems to actually work. I got a replacement headlight (used but good condition), installing this, creates more codes partly because it needs to be coded to the car.
I think the original headlight wiring shorted out and damaged something, while the lights work, the aiming feature might not be working properly.
Not sure if a dealer will want to code a used headlight, dealer cost of a new headlight won't be very practical.

Swap the silver module from the bottom of your old headlight to the new headlight. See if you get lucky and the module wasn't fried. If you're still getting errors, then your old module was shorted and the new module needs coding, yes.
Headlights will work without coding, but leveling, cornering, and cornering lights will not work. It'll just be a "dumb" headlight and you will get the error every time you turn on the lights (or every time the car starts if you have the headlight switch in auto).
Some dealers will code them, charge you one hour labor. Call and ask.

Before buying a replacement headlight, I moved the silver ballast, left to right. Same error message, still for the right. Then I bought the used replacement.
Not sure what might be wrong, all the lights work. on dash error, headlight malfunction.

Low beam and high beam will work. Other features will not.
I paid the dealer $200 to code my hl the first time. Then the headlight got moisture and fried the module again, and I decide to "make" me a PIWIS, lol. I've also shipped a ready to go laptop to one guy here. That said, the whole renting stuff is more effort than it's worth to imo, hence I've only done it a handful of times.
