Default 2006 4.5 Cayenne S

My 06' Cayenne S, hard cranked and sometimes just stalled while cold idling. Check Engine light is on. The initial codes showed faulty Crankshaft Sensor AND Crankshaft Position Sensor. I purchased the parts and my mechanic installed (a Camshaft sensor (2), one for each engine bank), and the Crank Sensor. Trunk runs a little better, but still cranks hard and erratic. Check Engine light still on.

Mechanic says when this happens it usually indicates a bad Timing Chain. I've dumped $$$ into these sensors and labor. How can I be sure this issue is the Timing Chain? Any advice would be appreciated.

The camshaft deviation parameters will tell you how far out of time each is, and consequently how much the timing chain and guides are worn. I would be skeptical of a mechanic who didn't check this before condemning the timing chain.

I posted this below in a new thread. I'd forgotten you and I had chatted, but yea this Porshe specialty shop gave me a print of why they are diagnosing the issue as a failed Timing Chain (he's saying it has loosened over time. It runs... but poorly. I don't have the insight to refute any of this. It certainly acts like a timing problem. Anyway, just thought I'd let you know from our previous conversation. I've towed it back to my driveway. I stumped...

Well, it's confirmed, my 06' needs a Timing Chain replacement (after a basic and full diagnostic tests). I have a different mechanic that will install the timing kit for $1500 labor (which is about half normal labor charges). The problem is... There is no Timing Chain set or kit for these Cayennes! I searched this planet, and all parts must be purchased individually. OEM parts for the Timing Chain parts and components comes to around $4000-$5000.

Can anyone shed any light on this?... is this typical of Cayennes V8 It has 130K.

Loosen the cam sprocket bolts. Reset the cam timing. Tighten the cam sprocket bolts. Done.
