Question Autocross Tires for a Cayenne

Ok, so I am contemplating some autox tires for my Cayenne S (seriously), but am concerned about load ratings. The Cayenne normally takes XL rated (light truck) tires. The load rating is apparently how many lbs the sidewall is designed to take. Load rating goes up/down based on the inflation pressure. Now, the problem is most track tires are only SL rated. Even when I compensate for the delta in pressures between the standard SL 35 psi and the standard XL 41 psi, the load ratings are still lower than stock tires. Here's a quick look at the tires I have now, and the two highest load rating I could find in track tires (in sizes I could use).

Code:
Brand Size Diameter Load Rating Type Load Rating
Conti Sport Contact 4x4 275/45x19 28.8 XL 2205 @ 41 psi
Kuhmo VictorRacer V700 275/40x17 25.3 SL 1635 @ 35 psi (1915 @ 41 psi)
Pirelli P Zero Corsa 285/30x18 24.9 SL 1433 @ 35 psi (1679 @ 41 psi)
So what do people think? Would it be safe to run the V700s or the Corsas for autocross?

Just a thought. Porche specifieded the tires with a tow load in mind. Call tire rack; they're pretty helpful.

Good luck. Tell us how you make out......

I think you should stick with the 914 if you want to autocross -- why do surgery with a meat cleaver when you already have a scalpel?

Yeah, the 914 is clearly a superior autocross (and track) weapon, but driving the Cayenne is just plain fun. Driving a 270hp, 2100lb 914 on slicks is like lighting a cigar with a flame thrower...sure it works great, but it's pretty intense. The Cayenne is fun because it's slow (relatively speaking). My 914, with its high power, wickedly low weight and low polar moment is fun in a different way. Some friends and I often talk about trading in these fast track cars and getting identical 914/1.7s, and run them in PCA Club Racing's GT-6R class!

Well, I'm about 7 weeks away from doing a Euro delivery on our Cayenne S and getting the chance to throw one of their demo cars around the test track in Leipzig. Needless to say, I'm really looking forward to it!

For regular track use at home I think I'll stick with the 951, however. The thought of expenses for track tires and brake pads for a regulary tracked Cayenne is pretty sobering. When my Cayenne S goes to the track, it will be as the tow vehicle for the 951!

Yeah, that's the primary purpose of my C-S. Still, I would be nice to see if I could turn a 2:25 at VIR in a truck .

Now that would be pretty nice! But I do know that our 951, on street tires, had no problem chasing down a Cayenne Turbo on the Jefferson Circuit at Summit Point a few weeks ago. And I think the 951 on slippery Kumho 712 tires will only turn 2:25 times at VIR in my dreams!

Wow, I never thought I'd see this topic!

Our endurance team mate took his CTT out on a practice day for a couple laps.

I'd be interested to see what the C-S could do on the track. I ran in the 2:18 at VIR in my 914 this past year with a bent rear trailing arm (let me tell you, a bent trailing arm makes the handling quite a handfull! ...especially up the climbing esses!). I have to believe that the C-S could turn some decent times (340hp does not lie)...maybe 2:30s on street tires?

The times would depend on a lot of variables -- high performance summer street tires, or all-seasons? air suspension or steel spring suspension? I'd love to see a photo of a Cayenne tearing around the Oak Tree! I was surprised with the Cayenne Turbo I saw on the Jefferson Circuit just how much body roll the car showed in the Esses. I mean, it was great for an SUV, but it was a heck of a lot more than what I am used to seeing on Porsches in PCA DE events.

In any event, on both the front and back straights you should be able to get over 130 mph and let the car settle into the "special" low height setting!

Took the 914 to the autocross last Sunday. A friend and I co-drove it and took FTD & 2nd overall. Ok, so maybe I will just get some autocross tires for the 914...
