Adding AUX input to 2006 Cayenne (CDR23)
I'm trying to add an AUX input to my 2006 Porsche Cayenne so I can play music from my smartphone. It doesn't have the upgraded Bose sound system, the navigation system, or the CD changer. My radio unit looks like the one in this video:
I bought a cable (image: https://i.ebayimg.com/images/g/SkgAA...Idr/s-l500.jpg) that, according to the pinouts listed on this thread: http://forums.pelicanparts.com/boxst...ml#post5800200, seemed to connect AUX to the CD changer input. I pulled out the radio (image: https://postimg.cc/vcQswpB1), unplugged the top plug, and plugged the cable into the top- and right-most part of the ports on the back of the radio. However, this solution did not work. When set to CD, the radio simply played from the internal radio CD player.
It seems to me that, because the car was not shipped with a CD changer system, the radio doesn't pay attention to input through ports C 18, 19, and 20. My question: if I visit a Porsche Dealership/Service Center and they reprogram the radio to expect a CD changer, will this solution work? It would be great if that works because it is an inexpensive solution also maintains the stock radio look, but if that doesn't work I will probably buy a modern radio unit (which has AUX) and swap it out for the existing one, since that seems like a cost-effective solution.
Thank you very much for your help!
The trick with them is that the radio has to be reprogrammed to recognize the module. It's not tough to do, but the module won't work without it.
I tried this, but it didn't work. When there's no CD in the drive, the radio just flashes "no CD" when I click the button to switch the source to CD; when there is a CD in the drive, the radio just plays from the CD.

I have a different radio than the one shown in that video – when I press and hold the TP button, the radio just mutes (or unmutes). I don't know how to get to the settings to turn on AUX. Is there a different procedure for the CDR23?
Also, the Amazon link you sent (thank you for your help!) seems to be a different plug than the cable I used (pictured here: https://i.ebayimg.com/images/g/SkgAA...Idr/s-l500.jpg) – could that be the problem?
EDIT: I looked at the description for that cable on Amazon and it says it does not work with the CDR23. Do you know of a solution that works with that radio? Thank you!

I've also seen a device that replaces the CD changer, but if you don't have the changer option, you need to go to a dealer and have them enable it.
I have the Bose system with the CDR23 and installed an AudioPipe wired FM modulator that connects inline with the antenna. It's 1000X better than any wireless modulator.
I also bought a cheap bluetooth/USB mp3/aux input module off eBay and connected that to the modulator. It's mounted in a custom panel in the storage area. After 7 years, I'm still happy with it.
If I didn't have the Bose system (which really complicates things with the fiber optics and odd speaker impedance), I would have gone with a new head unit.

My Porsche Indy (this guy has shop manuals in his head) changed the Beckers out. When we fired up the new CDR23 had "protected" come up on the display. He doesn't have the PIWIS software so the radios didn't show up on his extremely expensive scanner. He said this is because he doesn't have PIWIS to make the car and the stereo to see each other, then play properly. He apologized and said I'd have to deal with Porsche (Mobile Al.) and have them program the radio.
So I call Porsche and essentially get a long run around about having to remove the unit (it took my mechanic 5 minutes to swap units), then do a whole car scan, then maybe, just maybe, he could make it work. I ask him how much this is going to cost and he said if everything went right $450.
So the question is, am I getting a line of BS from Porsche...I mean 2 hours to see if with their PIWIS program to see if he can make the car communicate is a little absurd.....
Does anybody have any suggestions?
Thanks,
Tim
