Lightbulb Adding AUX input to 2006 Cayenne (CDR23)

Hello!

I'm trying to add an AUX input to my 2006 Porsche Cayenne so I can play music from my smartphone. It doesn't have the upgraded Bose sound system, the navigation system, or the CD changer. My radio unit looks like the one in this video:
(I believe it's a CDR23 radio). I'm not looking to spend a ton of money on this since I likely won't have the car in a year or two. I also don't care about preserving the CD player of FM/AM radio functionality since I use neither one.

I bought a cable (image: https://i.ebayimg.com/images/g/SkgAA...Idr/s-l500.jpg) that, according to the pinouts listed on this thread: http://forums.pelicanparts.com/boxst...ml#post5800200, seemed to connect AUX to the CD changer input. I pulled out the radio (image: https://postimg.cc/vcQswpB1), unplugged the top plug, and plugged the cable into the top- and right-most part of the ports on the back of the radio. However, this solution did not work. When set to CD, the radio simply played from the internal radio CD player.

It seems to me that, because the car was not shipped with a CD changer system, the radio doesn't pay attention to input through ports C 18, 19, and 20. My question: if I visit a Porsche Dealership/Service Center and they reprogram the radio to expect a CD changer, will this solution work? It would be great if that works because it is an inexpensive solution also maintains the stock radio look, but if that doesn't work I will probably buy a modern radio unit (which has AUX) and swap it out for the existing one, since that seems like a cost-effective solution.

Thank you very much for your help!

Long shot, but have you tried taking the CD out of the internal slot? Maybe if the CD is not present, it'll go "looking" for external changer and play from that?

There is an add-on module that plugs into the back of those Becker units. You can get an Aux In, but you can also get bluetooth.

Amazon Amazon

The trick with them is that the radio has to be reprogrammed to recognize the module. It's not tough to do, but the module won't work without it.

I tried this, but it didn't work. When there's no CD in the drive, the radio just flashes "no CD" when I click the button to switch the source to CD; when there is a CD in the drive, the radio just plays from the CD.

I have a different radio than the one shown in that video – when I press and hold the TP button, the radio just mutes (or unmutes). I don't know how to get to the settings to turn on AUX. Is there a different procedure for the CDR23?

Also, the Amazon link you sent (thank you for your help!) seems to be a different plug than the cable I used (pictured here: https://i.ebayimg.com/images/g/SkgAA...Idr/s-l500.jpg) – could that be the problem?
EDIT: I looked at the description for that cable on Amazon and it says it does not work with the CDR23. Do you know of a solution that works with that radio? Thank you!

You can send it to Becker and they can install an AUX input. It will be mono and supposedly sounds like crap.
I've also seen a device that replaces the CD changer, but if you don't have the changer option, you need to go to a dealer and have them enable it.

I have the Bose system with the CDR23 and installed an AudioPipe wired FM modulator that connects inline with the antenna. It's 1000X better than any wireless modulator.
I also bought a cheap bluetooth/USB mp3/aux input module off eBay and connected that to the modulator. It's mounted in a custom panel in the storage area. After 7 years, I'm still happy with it.

If I didn't have the Bose system (which really complicates things with the fiber optics and odd speaker impedance), I would have gone with a new head unit.

How about adding aux or Bluetooth to the non-Bose navigation system on the 2008?

I just acquired an'06 Cayenne S. The stock BeckerCDR23/Bose System doesn't work so I bought a CDR23 off eBay. The add said it was intended for the Bose system and had been tested to operate properly. It was only $100 so why not try.
My Porsche Indy (this guy has shop manuals in his head) changed the Beckers out. When we fired up the new CDR23 had "protected" come up on the display. He doesn't have the PIWIS software so the radios didn't show up on his extremely expensive scanner. He said this is because he doesn't have PIWIS to make the car and the stereo to see each other, then play properly. He apologized and said I'd have to deal with Porsche (Mobile Al.) and have them program the radio.
So I call Porsche and essentially get a long run around about having to remove the unit (it took my mechanic 5 minutes to swap units), then do a whole car scan, then maybe, just maybe, he could make it work. I ask him how much this is going to cost and he said if everything went right $450.
So the question is, am I getting a line of BS from Porsche...I mean 2 hours to see if with their PIWIS program to see if he can make the car communicate is a little absurd.....
Does anybody have any suggestions?

Thanks,
Tim

Buy a scan tool and code it yourself. The process should be something like selecting the appropriate radio module and then selecting between bose/standard sound. As for the dealership, yeah that's par of the course. They don't really want to work on a 20 year old car and they want to make sure that they will be paid handsomely regardless with no guarantees to you.

I use the small transmitter that plugs into the cigar lighter and transmits a signal from my phone to an unused FM band area. Works great
