Default Steering Wheel Vibration (Gone but not sure how)

Had a decent steering wheel vibration that hit around 70mph and above. Had a road force balance but no better. Planned to get 2 front loan wheels to check if tyres were the issue. (2004 CTT so different rear wheels). Caught up over Xmas on some maintenance, changed sparks and replaced air suspension compressor piston ring. (air suspension warning not gone but I think the compressor runs much less).

Out for a long run yesterday, all traces of vibration are totally gone. I'm perplexed as can't link the work I did to the vibration cure. Type pressures the same as before. Its colder now could that remove vibration or could the piston ring replacement somehow have cured a suspension issue that would give you steering wheel vibration?

OP - I don’t believe it’s gone. If it is, then awesome. Probably will come back every so often. Tires or a wheel or check the wheel hubs for play. Sympathetic vibrations in the frequency range found between 70-80 mph are generally wheel or tire. Sometimes a bad arm or link will help to amplify the imbalance.

Could it be the infamous Cardan shaft bearing support is failing? I think I had noticed vibrations coming and going for a little while before the problem appeared for real. And even then, it seemed that if I drove it gently enough, it could center itself and the vibrations would go away.

If unfamiliar with that, search here on Jimi fix, whether or not you choose that method for repair. BTW, mine went out a little past 100k miles on my 2004 S.

Thanks and I think you are right it will come back. I figured mine needed bushings and a few months back let a local Porsche expert take it a test drive. He felt the tyres were more likely the issue so the plan was for him to get a couple of spares and test the car with them fitted. It just left me confused as to why the vibration was suddenly gone soon after I changed sparks and compressor piston ring. It was still nice to be able to cruise on the motorway without the vibration.

Hi. My centre bearing support went a couple of years ago, started with a noise which took me ages to pinpoint, then slipping and then thudding in the centre console area. I used a Jimmi Fix pre manufactured silicon disc I bought from a German supplier for around 60 Euros. Not had a single issue since. And the vibration was more seat and console rather than directly coming through steering wheel.
