Cardan shaft problem
How can you tell, is this possible to determine during test drive? Which production dates to avoid? I'm looking at a 9/03 production CS to purchase. I drove it extensively during test drive, didn't notice any vibration at 50-60mph. If this occurs - is this repairable? Is it just better to avoid certain production dates? When did they fix this problem? I need to know ASAP, I'm picking up CS this weekend. Thanks

Not really, you "should" be OK.
During a test drive I doubt whether the excitement would let you tune into the more subtle sounds but on the basis that you might.....
In the early form of the problem you would hear a low frequency droaning noise.
Radio off
40+ mph
low or no accelleration
listen for a tone which goes up and down. I know this may sound odd but if you say the word "wummering" a few times, thats the sort of wave form your listening for. Its at its peak around 50 and dies off over 60-65.
The vibration comes later in the life cycle.

My Cardan shaft was perfect until 7000 miles, then it acted up.
Simple replacement (once I acquired Toby's Cardan shaft ), less than an hour up on the lift.
By now, your dealer should have a list of affected VIN's or he can look at the number of the Cardan shaft.
If you do a search, you'll find out all you ever wanted to know about a Cardan shaft for the Cayenne.
Best of luck with your purchase.
