Default Specialists don't want to work on my car

Last year I tried a Porsche specialist in Norfolk (UK), for oil/filter and transmission oil/filter change. Which was pricey, but I thought at least wouldn't hurt having a bill for that in my vehicles history. When I went back still having the PRND issues due to vac leaks, he was showing me where I could check. WTF I wanted HIM to check, fix it and bill me! I wasn't overly convinced as they don't see many Cayennes, but following the service manual should've been ok.

Roll on to this year and I thought that I'd have a stab at another specialist I'd heard about; also in Norfolk. I'd found various vac leaks and wanted him to chase down the rest with a smoke machine, sort the level control fault and diag my occasional engine rattle and delayed transmission shift.

Well the conversation went like this....

(me) Hello, Can you chase down the vac leaks with a smoke machine, sort the level control fault and diag my occasional engine rattle and transmission delay?
(specialist) What year is it?
(me) Its a 06 Cayenne
(specialist) ...(sigh)... (slumped shoulders), vac will be the Y piece, the level will be the compressor and the rattle a worn timing chain and is an engine out fix, and you probably have a lazy solenoid in the transmission.

WTF he should have grinned happily, thinking about booking a holiday to the Cayman islands on my hard earned cash, not seeming literally depressed at the thought of working on my car !!!!!

That said I know the Y piece is a common fail and said I'd change that out first and see what happens and he wanted to make sure I didn't but a secondhand part.

Its still booked in, but TBH if you cannot muster the enthusiasm to work on my car, I'm going to struggle to have the enthusiasm to pay you to do so and will probably cancel !!!!

Perhaps they don't like people who clearly have code readers, or I come across like a total cheapskate, or they hate old cayennes, or the owners' expectations of them fixing them,

I'm coming to the view that it's basically pointless taking an old Cayenne to a garage at all and I should just treat it as a project vehicle and (try to) fix when/if time allows.

Now I'm not saying they're not good at their jobs, but I am saying that neither specialist seemed keen to fix my vehicle.

Amusing but sad story at the same time. Have you considered finding recommendations for a good shop near you from your countrymen? Might want to post here https://www.porscheclubgb.com/forum/tt.aspx?forumid=85. But don’t dispare there are Brits contributing here as well.

Interesting! Could you PM me the dealers' details? I'm also in Norfolk.

Ah yes, 'Sales Prevention'... it seems to be a skill a great many places are practicing lately.

Because the shop would probably rather do 20x brake jobs in the same time it takes to pull an engine out of a Cayenne, make the same amount of money, and have far fewer chances to screw something up. I'm exaggerating here, but you get the idea. If the shop is busy, a large job will tie up a lift and will have to be interrupted frequently as other customers come in and out. Every interruption is a chance to screw something up, which would be expensive on a Porsche. It's not like the dealership where you have a team of folks to deal with customers and paperwork and allow mechanics to focus on their job uninterrupted.

You should be able to find a shop, but don't be surprised about their level of enthusiasm about a big job on a Porsche if they are not a Porsche specialist.

If a shop cannot be 100% certain that a leak (or whatever) is fixed they would rather not take the job.

If they guarantee their work and there is a callback the job will likely be lost money.

Cayennes are not known for timing chain issues. The engine torque damper may have a worn bushing.

BTW...been to Norfolk UK several times on business...a very nice area of the country IMO.

He would rather be working on an air cooled 911 turbo. They are easier to work on, simpler to fix, and he can charge more money without feeling guilty. The Cayenne has a lot of mysteries and gotcha's even when you know what you are doing.

Essentially, you brought him a 1000 piece puzzle with a few extra and missing pieces. When it is all done, it is a picture of a pig. He gets paid the same as doing the quick 200 piece puzzles which are a supermodel when completed.

I have a good friend, that is a Porsche mechanic at an independent. He avoids my Cayenne like the plague when possible!
