Default Fix Stepper Motor

05 CTT, 120k miles.

I've been getting the "Four Wheel Drive System Faulty" warning on startup. Intermittently, and directly correlated to temp. The colder it is, the more likely (although not a certainty) I will see it.
It normally stays on for one or two starts, then goes away for a couple.

Everything I've found says it's the stepper motor, although I haven't hooked up the Durametric to see if it's throwing any codes.

I've also found that the VW stepper motor is a acceptable (and cheaper) substitute.

But can the current one be fixed? Is there something in it that is worn, dirty or broken? Or is is just junk?
Has anyone tried to fix one? Did they succeed? Fail?

I'm not too worried about replacing it if I have to, but I prefer to fix stuff over replacing it whenever it's possible.

"4WD faulty" error covers a lot of faults. It's not always the stepper. I got a new stepper from FCP euro about a year ago based on part number and not designation so you do not have to have the Porsche part for sure.
Recently I started to get the 4wd faulty error. Pulled a code for pressure sensor lead implausible signal. The colder it was the more it happened and the code was never "active" when I pulled it while the error was displayed. Turned out to be the connector for the pressure sensor. I guess the cold was making the terminals contract and that was enough to set the fault. Easy fix.

Always get the latest, "C" revision of the stepper motor... now made by Buhler Industries(Canada). The USA-made Globe Motors(A-B versions) rusted out way too easily.
