Default Tow package questions...

Just bought a 2008 Turbo with Tow Package to tow my Brunton Stalker (Lotus 7 "replica") to the track.

It looks like the electrics have never been wired up - there's a metal plate screwed in place over the wiring access hatch. What parts will I need to make the wiring functional? Just some form of adaptor between whatever behind that hatch and a standard seven pin trailer connector? And that leads me to a second question - does the tow package include wiring for a brake controller? If so, then where should I look to find the brake controller wires up by the driver? And does anyone have a recommendation for a brake controller?

If there's no wiring for a brake controller then does anyone have suggestions as how best to add the wiring? Initially I'll be towing 1400lbs of car on 500lbs of trailer - but if I can con (er, persuade) my wife then I'd like to get a small toy hauler which will be more like 4000lbs of trailer and 1400lbs of car.

Thanks!

You will need these items:

https://www.etrailer.com/Wiring/Pollak/PK11893.html
Replaces the blank plate on the wiring connector, the wiring has a connector that plugs into this to allow connection to standard 7-pin trailer plugs.

https://www.etrailer.com/Wiring/Tow_Ready/20142.html
The "Tow Ready" adapter is needed if your trailer has LED lights, I still get a little flicker on the trailer tail lights, but no fault codes (no guarantees though).

The wiring for the brake controller is installed if you have a factory tow package, I don't think you will need to have anything programmed if it is factory, I didn't.
Controller wiring it is under the drivers dash above the parking brake. You will need to remove a panel under the dash (one torx screw).

You will need this adapter plug to connect the brake controller to the plug under the dash. There is a pin-out table on that page since the wires are not color coded.

I have a basic (time-delayed type) controller and it works fine, think I paid $35 for it. There are posts regarding some electronic ones that require a relay I think.
I tow a 1900lb steel trailer & a 2850lb 944 with my 2006 CS, no issues...

Good luck, Andrew

No problem, took me days of searching posts, least I can do is pay it forward.
Also, I put the tiptronic in manual when I tow, or you can turn off PSM but you will live in the 3500-4000 RPM range, may not be be needed for your Turbo though

With the stock tow package, when you plug the trailer into the Cayenne, it recognises the trailer and turns on a tow mode, similar to hitting the sport button, but for towing.
When towing my boat I leave the CTT in Drive and let the vehicle shift on its own. One thing I do is tow with the Cayenne in low ride height and with sport dampening on. Makes for a very solid tow vehicle.

The parts are on order (along with a brake controller from e-trailer). sounds like it should be an easy install (famous last words?)

The Pollak plug from etrailer is shown with connectors on the back. Am I right to assume that behind the cover plate there are "bare" wires"? I don't have any trouble crimping on connectors but is there a sheet that describes which color wire in the box is what function (left turn signal, right turn signal, etc.)?

Not bare wires, it is a "universal" connector to allow for different trailer plugs if needed.
The Pollak adapter plug will plug into the connector behind the blank plate and attach to the bracket with the same 4 screws from the blank plate.
The blank plate is actually a holder for that universal connector, take off the plate and the connector is attached to the back of the blank plate.

Default "Installing an Electronic Trailer Brake Controller"

Thanks to Karl Wilen, Der Sportwagen Technical Editor (AKA Porschedoc from RennsportKC) -- He has published the definitive article on this subject in the KC Region PCA Sept/Oct 2012 Edition of Der Sportwagen (pages 6-8) titled, "Installing an Electronic Trailer Brake Controller"

Hi guys, I got my 7 way receptacle installed like you. But, it blocks the ability to install and remove the pin. The bracket is metal, connected to the hitch and when you mount the plug I can't remove or install a locking pin. Am I doing something wrong here or just bad design?

You have posted in the 2003-2010 Cayenne section, where it's mostly peasants who wouldn't know how to answer a question about a 2020 Cayenne. You might have better luck in the appropriate forum section where more noble Cayenners might be able to help you, or at least suggest that you visit your dealer.

I'm definitely a peasant, but those trailer tow connectors are usually installed with the finger release pointing down as in the video vs sideways as in your picture. I expect this would give you more room although I don't know if it would be enough to work a key. You might just have to do like us poors and use a regular pin with hairpin attachment.
