Question Audio installation - how?

I plan on installing a Kenwood Music Keg (mp3 player) in the trunk space but I do not previously have any experience with car audio installation.

There is a thread by Kevin M. on installing it under the front passenger seat. Since I don't have a CD changer, it would be probabily cleaner installation in the trunk.

It appears that power connection is already prewired. I don't have any idea about routing the audio wire to the head unit though.

Is there info on the assembly of the trim panels and head units (CDR-23)? Would the tech manuals help? If so, can I get only 1 volume? They are pretty expensive and I don't need all of them.

WCS, Couple of questions for you.. first off I see you have the in dash CD correct? If thats the case I believe you can purchase the Phatnoise system which is the same manufacture as the Kenwood system, however the Kenwood Keg is not compatble with the Porsche Head unit, you need a FM modulator. If you do have the Kenwood and still want to connect it to your in dash CD, then there is no reason to mount unit in the trunk. You would have to run that thick wire from your dash all the way to the rear. Not worth the trouble of tearing up carpet. You will also need FM adapters for the antennas if your using a modulator. To pull out the stock unit, the trim piece around the whole stereo pops off from the bottom, just slowly pull that off and you will see hex screws behind the trim. If you still want to install the unit in the rear I would suggest buying the Phatnoise unit instead.

Kevin, yes I have the in dash CD. I'll take your suggestion and install it in the front then.. I saw your thread in Music Keg install but I'm still not confident about doing it myself.

My dealers sometimes damage the trims, so I wouldn't have confidence to have some audio shop do the installation.

For regular FM modulators I'll need a power switch. Did you install a power switch for the Kenwood FM modulator, or is the panel used to turn on/off the modulator?

The Phatnoise unit wouldn't work with MOST network so I'll stick to Kenwood. I'm still deciding whether to wait for a direct connection from Phatnoise or just go with the FM modulator. They seem to have plans to make MOST compatible units but there's no ETA yet AFAIK.

The digital sound is so nice yet it is nearly impossible to find aftermarket solutions... pretty frustrating.

BTW my trunk is prewired for CD changer by factory. There is mounting bracket and two wires (one with red connector, multile pins, and another black one with 2-3 pins). That's why I wanted to install it in the trunk; the new wire can go through the same route as the existing ones.

Its really simple.. I would say the most difficult part would be running the wire some wires... The modulator as a on/off switch you need to run power over to the fuse box #48 is a switchable fuse.. The wire hides up under the dash and easily goes into the fuse box.. I hid the main modulaor box under the passager side carpet in the top left corner.. It sounds like its difficult but not at all..

I see. So when the power is on, would I still be able to listen to the radio stations other than the modulated frequency? I saw mudman's posting about his iPod installation; he had a power switch and I thought when it is switched on the radio won't be useable.

Do you need to expose the main modulator to tweak the adjustments (frequency, level), or is it controllable through the panel?

So the only trim you need to take out is the cover for the fuse box and the head unit? That sounds reasonable... I'll give it a try if the MOST compatible unit is not coming out anytime soon.

Thanks.

No you simply shut the power off in order to listen to other stations. If its on it makes all other stations staticy. No the modulator is set for 88.3 no need to adjust it or have it visible.

Correct on the covers..

What do you mean by "shut the power off"? The power button on the silver Kenwood modulator face plate?

Also, the main cord going from the music keg under the seat to the modulator, is it exposed? Did you try to hide it somewhere?

Thanks again for your answers.

Correct there is a on/off buttun on the plate...

The main cord plugs into the modulator box, and then runs to the keg and it is hiddedn under the carpet, I ran it along the entry plate.

No prob!!
