P0743 - Torque Converter Clutch Circuit Electrical (HELP?)
Hi team!
So I took the P!G out a few days ago and my luck went to poop. 2004 CTT
As I put the car in Reverse, I notice it slams into gear pretty hard. ehh, no biggy... keep driving, right? =(
I get a few blocks away and then onto the highway, where she won't shift out of 3rd gear.
So I pull over, clear the code. Restart the car.... code comes back. Car only has P, R, N, and 3rd gear. Will not shift auto or manual out of third gear.
I limp home and Disconnect the battery. Reconnect... same code, same issue.
Has anyone dealt with this code or something similar?

Emergency "Limp" Mode
In mechanical emergency running mode, 3rd gear is
always engaged. If the transmission is already in 4th,
5th or 6th gear, the current gear is maintained until the
selector lever is placed into the neutral position and
the engine is stopped.
When starting off, 3rd gear is always engaged
whether the selector lever is in the D or S position.
Reverse is available.
System pressure is controlled to the maximum value;
the shifting elements are pressurized to maximum
shifting pressure. This results in a hard shift when
engaging the driving mode. The torque converter
lock-up clutch remains off.
N91 Solenoid
Most likely a bad TCC solenoid in the valve body.

FWIW, you can buy individual solenoids and if you want to do diagnosis on your own I can give you some tech documentation for resistance values and how to go about it. Just PM me.

Update:
After speaking with a super helpful guy at revmaxconverters.com I learned that the "Lifetime Transmission Fluid" statement is bunk, and is a convenient way to cause Solenoids to go bad in these Valve Bodies that the Cayenne shares with the VW Jetta and other vehicles.
My N91 Solenoid did go bad in this case, and it could have probably been replaced by itself for $60, although I did not want to chance other solenoids going out since I have 165k miles on my Cayenne, so I replaced the entire Valve Body.
Part # 09D TR60SN OEM Updated Valve Body
$700
Originally I was worried that I needed a new Transmission, but I've heard/read that fortunately for us Cayenne owners the tranny is pretty bulletproof and the majority of these types of failures are all within the Valve Body and it's design to fail.
An excellent way for the common customer to assume the worst, and trade their vehicle in for next to nothing on a brand new vehicle.
All in all. Do you research and stay positive!
Thanks to Rennlist, Revmax, and RennsportKC!

Good news that you got it sorted. I went with the RevMaxx valve body after hard shifting in 5-4 & 4-3 and couldn't be happier now. Shifts beautifully. Good luck on the swap out.
