Interesting Skidpad numbers for Cayenne and VW
Recent issue of Motor Trends lists Lat. acceleration, g as follows:
Touareg V6 0.75
Touareg V8 0.76
Cayenne S 0.80
Cayenne TT 0.85
Interesting variations. I'm pretty sure the Touareg V8 had air suspension and suspect the Cayenne S did as well.
So why is the Cayenne significantly better?
Tires?
PASM better than VW's?
40/60 split of the Cayenne?
Thoughts?

Those test results were so vague and didn't specify anything about what the cars were equipped with. One thing for sure is that the Cayenne S was wearing 18" all-season tires, assuming the photo was correct. Personally, I would choose high performance tires over air suspension in a skid pad test.

The MT test listed the Touaregs as wearing 17" Dunlop M+S and 18" Conti M+S tires. These are all-season winter capable shoes. Not by any means meant for ultimate dry performance.
The Nov C&D tested the Pepper on 20" dubs with Michelin Diamaris at 0.85, and the Touareg on 19" Pirelli PZero Rossos at 0.82.
The November R&T tested both the Touareg and the Cayenne Turbo on the same 19" Pirelli PZero Rosso and got the same skid - 0.83 for both. Interestingly enough, the Touareg had a higher slalom speed and shorter braking distance than the turbo. Most likely explained by the fact the turbo weighed 300 lbs more.
The Jan C&D tested the Touareg on 18" Bridegstone Turanza summer tires and it had a skid # of 0.82.
The only consistently changing variable between all the tests was the tires. Tires explain the differences.
