the early cars had a larger cigarette lighter socket than the later ones and are pretty useless with modern accessories which don't fit, I had the same problem when I wanted to add another socket to the other side and bought an old one that now only is really good for the cigarette lighter it came for and not much else. you are probably best to swap it for one of these https://www.suncoastparts.com/product/PK9X6LIGHTER.html

Not ridiculous at all. Had same issue with a Verizon charger. I simply wrapped the charger with black electrical tape. It holds and you can't even see it. Can't recall off hand. It might be two wraps.
Verizon charger is pretty long so I had room to do this.
