Waiting on super charger. Have been looking at 986s
I've been on the hunt for either a 951, 944s2, or a s2 cab. Then a few weeks ago I stumbled upon some Boxster reviews and got interested.
Targeting 2000 to '04 "S" models. Can pick up a non S rather inexpensive in that range of years but I fear regret - suspension, 6 speed, 3.2 ltr, exhaust... Etc.
I'm semi versed with the issues for these models as much as reading can help. Anyone here have positive or negative reviews? Prior owners?
Thanks
Kevin

I have a 2.5L non-S for playing with on the track. Super fun cars with amazing handling. The 2.5 is best above 4k RPM. Loads of fun and cheap to work on. As you've discovered all issues are pretty well known at this point.

I bought it with 150k from the original owner for next to nothing almost 6 years ago. If you are not afraid of miles there are some great deals on well maintained boxsters.

I've been thinking about a Boxster for a while. Pretty much decided if I get one, it'll be an 07 S model. It's got variocam, same basic engine as the 99-2001 996 at 3.4L and similar perf in a mid engine car. Only offered on the 07 and only the S model. They aren't as cheap as the earlier models, but the step up in perf is well worth the added cost to me.

Good to hear the higher mileage. Shopping this car is much more relaxing. The market for the 951s are also picking up and was hard to just be able to look at one before it was swiped away.
I have a 10k initial car budget. Surprised at the variety to pick from.

Try the S and the regular one then, decide what you want. The S has the same straight line performance and handles better than the 996.

I bought a non S 1999 986 for my wife. Its a high miler but has had a motor/tranny swap from a low mileage car, new Bilsteins all the way around and lots of other recent maintenance. Not the fastest car in a straight line (but respectable) and it handles like a dream, plus I picked it up uber cheap.

I'm a current owner of a 2002 base now with over 301K miles. Best car I've ever owned.
Not sure I'd supercharge one. The stock engine has pretty high compression: 11.4:1 IIRC already and you won't be able to run much boost (just 4 to 5psi) safely. (My 2003 Turbo can run 0.7 bar (approx. 10psi) and it has inter-coolers and lower (9.4:1) compression.)
Hopefully the supercharger kit comes with an inter-cooler. (Just a FWIW: the word I get is the new Boxsters/Caymans, at least the S models, will have an inter-cooler located over the engine and cooled by its own liquid cooling system. Cool. (No pun...))
