Possible to install a 996 3.4 or 3.6 engine?

The 3.4 seems to be a pretty tried and true conversion, I'm delighted with mine. On a chassis dyno I got 256 AtRW which means something like 305 flywheel. By the way, list price at a dealer for the engine is $6500 and delaer cost is, I believe $5800 so you won't get too much of a discount. The catch is that they won't take your 2.5 for the core so you also have to pay the $2500 core charge, bringing the cost to $9k give or take.
Since we have a couple of guys with experience at conversions on the board I'd like to ask a question that I have posted on other boards with no result. The 3.6 seems to be a much more difficult conversion, fraught with electronic gremlins, due in part to the fact that the 3.6 has Vario Cam+ (varying valve timing and duration, not just timing as in the 2.5,2.7,3.2 and 3.4). Does anybody have a happy conversion story with dyno sheets to prove the 340hp that everybody agrees this conversion ought to produce? This is not meant as a challenge to the professionals on this board, I'm just curious if anybody has got this figured out.
Cheers
Randy

Well, ok, it is $13.9k and the new engine from Porsche is much less than $9000 from the dealer. All-in-all, it takes about 5 days from start to finish including a dyno session to make sure everytihing is operating properly. It truely is a very nice conversion. We've been seeing early Boxsters go through the auction for $15k and this upgrade is perfect for that scenario. It makes a car 'S' fast for less money.

Hello Geoffrey,
I have a 2000S and would be interested in realizing that conversion. Including a new paint job and new suspension. What would be the cost for a 3.6L conversion if you start from a S model? How much can I offset the cost by reselling my 3.2L engine (about 20,000 miles)?
Thank You for the feedback

Hi Everyone,
Here is a link to the 3.4 conversion Geoffrey is refering to.
http://www.demanmotorsport.com/deman...lery.php?pid=5
It truely is a $14K conversion...engine straight from Porsche, stainless headers, stainless cats and reprogramed brain....we have 5 done and on the road, and 3 see frequent track/DE use...no problems at all!
The 3.4 produces about 270HP at the rear wheels....
We will be attempting the 3.6 into an S soon and will keep you all posted..

jlopez - where was this miracle performed? It does seem as though the 3.6 would require far more surgery, perhaps even using the 996 dash and parts of its wiring harness, the way Ruf did on its 3.4's in the early days. I'm glad to hear there is one happy story - there's yet hope that there will be somebody to put a 3.8 into my Boxstercoupe in a couple of years...
Cheers
