How much should this cost?
Hi Folks,
A very reputable garage here is quoting $4491.00 to replace the clutch and the IMS bearing on my 2000 Boxster S, about $1150 less if they do not change out the IMS bearing. Two thirds of the cost of the total repair is parts. It has only 45,000 miles on it, but the clutch is definitely slipping. I just purchased in in the Fall and put 3000 miles on it. The technician thinks the previous owner road the clutch and/or did not know how to drive a stick. They looked the car over. There are no other issues.
Do you think I would be better of fixing it and maybe selling it, or just selling it as is?
Thanks,
Mark

I didn't ask, and I will when I get back to them. The Technician expressed a concern about hot spots in the flywheel (he thinks the previous owner was inept and/or road the clutch), so I assume he is concerned about flywheel damage.

You're in the right place. Total price seems high and that split for parts/labor sounds off. In 2013 I had clutch, RMS, LN Engr IMSB done on my 04 S. The labor to drop and reinstall the trans, replace the clutch, and RMS was about $1000. Can't recall the parts cost but clutch and RMS are not that much. For the IMSB I was charged an additional 700 labor to set the cam positions, remove/install the bearing and the LN bearing itself was nearly $700. I'd recommend upgrading the bearing if you're doing the clutch. It's not cheap, but it may save your motor. In the end it's a personal risk judgement. As to whether or not to do the work or just sell the car, that's another individual judgement. If you like the car and plan to keep and drive it then it's obvious. If not maybe better to get out. In my experience these cars need maintenance and repairs as they age. I recently replaced the CV boots for example.

IMO that is a ridiculous price. assume retail prices AND a replacement flywheel:
IMS kit: $800
clutch: $800
FW: $800
Labor: 8hrs @ $100 = $800
$3,200 total.
if you just do the clutch itself & leave the flywheel and IMS alone, it's about 6hr labor. if you use aftermarket parts (i.e. spec clutch), the clutch price drops to $600. that puts you at $1400 to change the clutch. 6hr labor is generous, BTW. for people that do this job frequently & have the right tools, it is a very easy job. transmission out in less than an hour.

My '03 S is at an Indy shop right now. I get it back tomorrow. I'm in the Great White North and was quoted $4,400 Canadian for LN Retrofit IMS, flywheel, clutch and RMS plus my brake/clutch fluid is being replaced. This translates to about $3,400 US$ at todays exchange rate.
The shop labour rate is $120/hr CDN and they budget 10 hours for the main work plus 1 for the fluid change. So there is $1,320 in labour alone. Parts break down is something like this in CDN$:
Flywheel - $900, Clutch Components - $800, IMS - $1000, Brake Fluid and Misc - $380.
So, to sum up, I figure a complete job in the US should come in somewhere between $3,000 and $3,500 with the big variable being the shop labour rate. Components will likely be the same regardless of the shop.

I just did mine myself. The LN bearing and tools cost $1000 and I resold the tools for $250. You can buy the new clutch assembly on ebay from LUK or Sachs all day for about $350-400 The dual mass flywheel is the same new from LUK. The rear seal is about $30. Oil and filter about $60.
With minimal tools because I was away from home (but being a retired tech) it took me about 8 hours because I had never done one before and also did plug tubes and AOS same time . Find a shop who has done one before and isn,t going to charge you to learn how. I have seen others pay about $12-1300 labor for clutch, RMS and IMS . Total maybe max $3000

I can tell you exactly what the cost of all that is as I just had it all done at Porsche here in Vancouver, BC
These prices are in CAD from January 15, 2016 when dollar was at 1.35ish, it's 1.25 now
Clutch repair kit - retail = $968 / at cost = $665
All extra nuts, screws, o-rings, etc about $100
Flywheel retail & cost = $677
IMS $1094 + extras about $50
Total in parts was $2842
Labour 8hrs

Hi! Congrats on the new purchase. For this, I think I can be of extreme help to you, I am from (and live in) the Fort Wayne area, and know quite a few of the techs personally in the area, (at least three out of the five to six). I'd like to know who quoted this for you, however I would prefer you PM it to me so we can have a discussion without any publicly mentioned names. I would say this does FOR SURE sound high. I would be more than happy to assist you in either fixing this or finding a better suited shop for your $. Always more than happy to help out a fellow p-car lover. Hope to hear from you, and have a good day.
