Bummer.

Broken shifter is almost always a new car problem. My 03 Turbo suffered a broken shifter at around 30K miles. The plastic retainer clip the shifter cable ball snapped into failed.

I didn't try to limp anywhere but was able to coast to an intersection and make a turn and coast to the side of a residential street. I called the tow truck. Limping anywhere with a broken shifter cable puts the clutch at risk as excessive slipping is called for to get the car moving from a stop.

You (and the car) were lucky limping home didn't cost you a clutch.

I just ordered a set of Numeric cables. After doing a ton of research, they sound like the way to go.
