Question I have a ? about the soft top

I would've tried to use the search function, but it has been disabled. Anywayz, I just bought a '99 boxster not to long ago, and I was looking to replace the OEM soft top that comes with the plastic window with a newer one with the glass window. My question is can this be done, and how much would this cost? If anyone has had any experience in this matter I would appreciate any advice. If this can be done, where can I order a new soft top for a good price? Thanx

My parts guy gave me these prices a few months ago. Frame $6,534.16. Top $2,069.20. Plus labor. Now you know why no one has done this. Jeff

Wow, thanks for telling me that. I guess I'll stick with the plastic window.

Jeez, not cheap. I wonder if you could find an auto restoration/custom shop that could just make a glass piece to replace the plastic one?

The plastic piece folds, the glass piece does not. The new top has four folding arms while the older top has three. So I'm afraid that wouldn't work. Dammit.

I'm kinda wondering how long before we might be able to find a used new style top from a totalled car?

Default 03 top on older cars.

It has been said on some other boards that only the 02 could be retrofitted with the 03 top. Nothing older. Why not sow a zippered glass into it and just un zipper it when ready.

That would certainly be an option, although it would be a pain to be swapping out the window all the time.

Probably the easiest option would be to just get a hardtop for the times when you'll want to stay covered most of the time

The main reason I was asking about the glass soft top is because I wanted to slighty tint my windows, and I know you can't tint the plastic window. What I did find out is that I can get a new plastic tinted window stitched in, so that I can now accomplish my goal.
