Mini Cooper S or Boxster - the debate rages in my head!!
OK, you all know I have my Cayman S for sale! In case you didn't check the for sale section. So I have committed to my mom to buy my deceased step-dads Mini. From there the plan was to turn it into a monster track car. I have even bought some unobtanium parts (JCW Challenge coil-overs and Wing - both are NEW in box). But being a Porsche guy, I got to thinking about a 1999 to 2002 Boxster (not S, out of my price range). I figure I can spend in the 8-9K range on a Boxster. There are a few of them out there in that price range. One of them on this very forum. The idea would be to turn the Boxster into a track monster too.
So WHAT SHOULD I DO!?!?!?!?!? Buy my Mom's mini and have fun with it for a couple of years? Or sell it for her. Then once the CS sells, I would buy a Boxster. AHHHHHHHHHHHH.

Boxster without a doubt. I think the handling of a boxster (like your Cayman) make it the ideal track car. I haven't driven a mini, but I loved how my Boxster handled and thought about just keeping it and converting it to a track car. I let it go because it was too nice for that and got a good price for it.

Two very different cars, and of course you are going to get a slew of the same answer here. But I think everyone here can agree that both are fine, fine cars that execute their intended purposes very well. The Mini is a great, fun FWD; the Boxster is a great, fun mid-engined true sports car. Fundamental differences that make comparing the cars objectively difficult, and just by our membership on this forum you can safely guess members' subjective preferences already. My point- who are we to fit a car into your subjective preference?
What do you want to do with the car once it's a track monster? Maybe the right choice depends on what everyone else around you is running. Do you want to be in a class with a bunch of others or out by yourself? I know people will run spec Miata/E30 because that's what everyone else does. Normally a bad reason to do something, but in those cases, the car isn't nearly as important as the close competition, so it works out.
Outside of that, this one is all on you. Do you prefer a FWD at the track over a mid-engined RWD or vice versa? The two drive very differently, and are interesting and fun in their own separate ways.

I've only driven both cars a couple of times ... but to me it would distil down to ... with the boxter there is much to grow to appreciate as one's time with the vehicle increases, with the cooper much to grow to loathe, like the aesthetics, engine note, the prevailing "doh, should have gone with a boxter" ...
