Did a search here and using the mighty google. Surprised not to find any about mirror replacement.
Okay, that's not true, a few people have posted info about replacing the whole housing. Luckily that's not what I am doing.
And of course it's very easy to replace just the glass.....
...unless your car is 12 years old, like ours, and an extra "ring" comes off with the glass. See the photo.
Near as I can tell this might be part of the motor assembly.
I just cannot figure out how to put it back on solidly. It sit in there nicely but just falls right back out if you look at it funny.
There must be a screw or bolt or clip or adhesive that is needed?
I think it's part of part #11 in this parts diagram. Maybe. But unfortunately, this blow up doesn't tell me how that connect....

It seems like it could be glued into place, and still travel freely on the motorized assembly.
But I don't think that is how it was connected.
---
I think I have narrowed it down in part. There are two slender ribber plastic white adjustment pins/shafts that move in and out to make the mirror go left versus right. If they travel too far, they pop out. I am wondering whether there are really supposed to be four, and maybe I lost two when switching the glass.
---
Looks like I may be picking up one of these:
MIRROR ADJ. MOTOR
G99662404800 - Genuine Porsche
Price: $167.91
Description
Known as: adjusting motor / adjusting motor aspherical

I replaced my original mirrors with aspheric mirrors and it was only popping off the glass and the part you are showing remained mounted to the rest of the assy and the glass clipped back on after attaching the wires. Both on a '99 and '01.

Yeah, I think 12 years of withstanding the elements may have made the part I am showing too easy to accidentally dislodge/break.
What you describe as your experience is how the OTHER side worked :-)
I've found a used motor assembly and got it on order. That appears more reliable that trying to piece the one I have back together. I'm not 100% all the parts are still in tact. Maybe I just pulled it apart too deeply and it can be re-assembled. But I cannot find any detailed pictures or video or service docs that would give me confidence that is the case....
I don't like to throw away $50 but it seems the safest route is to replace the whole assy.
