thinking about a boxster comaprison with a 944
My 944 just got totaled, so I'm in the market.
Any Boxster owners also own (or owned) 944 / 968?
I'm looking for peoples views on the benefit or draw backs of a 2000 Boxster over a 92-93 968 or 944S2 / 951

I have had both the Boxster as well as the 951 so I will give you my point of view for what it is worth. But First what you have to decide is what you want the car to do?
First the Boxster. I love the Boster as you might have guessed by my RennList name. The body is very stiff and you can feel it when you drive. Very solid feel. The non 'S' Boxsters remind me a lot of the early 911's in that they are light weight and low on torque but once the car gets moving they really fly. You have to keep the car in the upper RPM's to get the most out of the car. Boxsters also have an amazing sound and is one of the best looking cars out there IMHO. Parts are easy to get and fairly cheap. They are also very easy to work on. The bad side is the ISB (Intermediate Shaft Bearing)
LN makes a retrofit kit for under $1000 and is easy to do. The Boxster is a very good Auto-X and track car. They are also a fun daily driver that has more trunk space that one might think. A lot of 996 parts fit and are easly found which makes upgrades cheaper and fun.
The 951 is a very different car. When It comes to top speed and acceloration the Boxter cant even come close. It is very addicting. They are also very solid cars but feel heavier. The 951 is very stable at high speeds and seems very safe where as the Boxtster above 125mph was scary to me. 951 Parts are very expensive and are getting scarce. With that in mind, 951's are getting rare and hard to find in good condition and are very expensive to own. Personally I think that 951's have bottomed in price and think that good clean unmolested cars will soon go up in value. I bet there are fewer than 2000 left in the US. Thanks Lart. LOL
Both cars are great and I love both for very different reasons!

I have owned several 944's and 951's. Just recently got into the Boxster. The cars are poles apart. I would now take a Boxster over any of the 944 range. If you want 951 performance, buy a Boxster 'S' and say goodbye to just about every other car in the twisties. I have been through some corners in the Boxster and then looked down at the speedo and thought "holy crap, I was not even pushing". Boxster for sure.

Unstable above 125mph? My Boxster S loves life at 150mph and will charge right up there with gusto. Solid as a cast iron stove. In my opinion, the Boxster is the best car, "on the planet", for under $150k but it really depends on what you want and expect from a car in order to determine its suitability and or worthiness. Subjectivity seems to creep into anything pertaining to automobiles, so hard numbers really mean nothing unless you are racing.
My Boxster can excite me at any speed...even turning the light on in the garage gets my excited.

As an owner of both a 88 924S club race car and a cruiser '06 Boxster S I have to ask, what do you intend to do with the car? My old 9245 is a much better track car than my '06 987 but the 987 has a radio and a/c.

..pony up a some more $ and get a 996, they have to be the best value on the street now....and then don't look back ! otherwise i would go 2000 boxster if looking for a DD. In any event, have fun with the hunt, its the best part. Good luck !

I just switched from 85.5 944 na to '01 Boxster 2.7 and love it. really enjoyed the 944 for 13 yrs
but always wanted a convertible and something newer after I got spoiled driving my son's 996.
will probably move into an S eventually, but the 2.7 is a lot of fun.

Thanks for all the input. To answer some questions, it will primarily be a daily driver to the office and customers approx 200miles per week.
I like the idea of a 996 and will in the future when I can justify $25k for a C4 so I can drive all year and enjoy it in the snow.
I'm really looking for a stick but my wife would be happier with a auto. Any feed back on the tiptronic from drivers who like stick?
Thanks

I've had 3 944's and I can tell you the modern refinement of the boxster was just what the doctor ordered. I traded in my '88 944 last year for a '99 boxster. Once I test drove it, it sold itself. Go test drive one. see if you like it, I'd love to have a 996, but I'm having issues with not having the trunk space. It has come in handy. I think it's the next best thing to having a hatchback

I have a Boxster S as my daily driver.
Race 924S and 944 NA and just acquired a 951 street/track car.
I have not tracked the Boxster -- I just thought that the 951 would make a better
street/track car than my S and I still get to keep my S as a daily driver.

While I did love my 924S, and loved the 968 I was in once... I'd have to say for DD, BoxsterS it. It's the newness that makes it much more livable, I feel. The trunk and hood space is excellent. It's not a Suburban, but it holds more than you would think.
Find a well serviced Boxster, IMS guardian it, and you're set.

I had an '89 951. The acceleration was addictive but it seemed like an old school car. I now have an '05 Boxster S. Maybe about the same speed but world's better in handling and driver feedback. I test drove 996s and 997s and think the Boxster is more fun to drive than they are. I've since driven a couple 997s and while they have more power still prefer the Boxster. My current thinking is if you want an icon get a 911, if you want a fun car get a Boxster. My wife absolutely loves the Boxster. She rode in the 951 once. That was enough for her.

I have a Boxster, and had a 968. Both are good commuter cars.
The performance capabilities of the Boxster (cornering, braking, acceleration, etc.) exceed those of the 968. But both are equally comfortable for long daily commutes.
As much as I liked the 968 (172K miles!), the Boxster is a superior commuting car in my opinion.
