Default O2 Sensor Spacers - Bad idea?

Headers for the boxster are expensive!!! I am very tempted to try the cheap ebay headers, but they have no cats. I saw an article by a guy who used the ebay headers & used O2 sensor spacers to get rid of the CEL. As tempted as I am to try, this seems like it may be a bad idea, trying to fool the ECU this way. Wouldn't doing this cause the Fuel mixture, and or timing to be adjusted in an adverse way? Not that I'm really looking to do away with the pre-cats, but I would like a set of equal length manifolds that I could actually afford.

Anyone have thoughts or experiences with the O2 sensor spacer method?
